Students should be allowed to add assignments to their own "upcoming assignment" list to use Schoology as a work planner even if there is no submission for the course.
Many students don't use a separate planner to keep track of their assignment anymore because of the "upcoming" assignment feature in Schoology. This creates a scenario where students forget to do certain HW when it's not turned in, i.e. reading or finishing a worksheet from class. If students could add notes/"assignments" on their own with due dates then Schoology could function as their electronic planner as well. Students could enter their work in class and be reminded of it when they login at home.
