Instructor Q&A

Private Access only when student has adjusted privacy settings to allow

I have used Schoology Basic for years.

For the first time, I am having issues with being able to message my students privately, even when they message me, I am unable to reply.  Through research I discovered the Privacy Settings that can create this issue, however, even after changes were made to allow messaging, I cannot message most students.

Since I have some students I can message and others I cannot within the same class, it appears to not be a global class setting.

I set up a dummy student account to figure out the issue and make sure the adjustment would work.  I then advised parents and students how to adjust their privacy settings, however, when students made the change on their privacy setting, as I previously indicated for most students I still am unable to see the student's profile or message them directly.

What I asked them to do on their Privacy Settings under School was to check to allow access to Profile and Messaging, then save, which worked for my dummy account and for just a few of my students who made the change.

When I try to send a message I get:

The following users will not receive this private message: 85240695
When I try to see their profile to message from there I get:
Private Access Only

I know it is a setting, but my research has not given an answer as to what.  Since I am on a Basic service teaching at a private school, I am my IT person.

    Hi Karen,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.  We've notice that this error message occurs when users are trying to send emails to indiviuals outside of their organization or at different schools. In this case, did you have all of the students and parents change their privacy settings to organization

If you continue to experience difficulty with this issue, please let us know.  We will be happy to take a closer look.

I am on the Basic service, so organization is not a choice on the privacy setting, which would be awesome.

I am in a private school setting.  My school is Revelation Science and the location I teach at is The Training Center.  We both use the Basic Schoology.  There is a portion of students who sign up for classes associated with both school accounts.  Which ever one they sign-up with first is the school listed on their profile.  When they then sign-up for a class in the other school, it gets added without having to set-up a second account and without asking for the school name.  That translates to the instructors associated with the second school not being able to respond to individual messages nor send one.  It is not possible to link between the schools, because the student has ONE account that allows them in to BOTH schools.

I had students adjust what they could on Privacy, which is only under School or No One.  Even when everything is checked as OK under School, it makes no change.  Only the school listed under their profile is able to communicate to them individually.

I have tried the Community, but this situation should not exist, so no suggestions.
