Instructor Q&A

I am unable to reply to my student's message.

This has happened twice. I get a message from a student and type up my reply and when I send. this is the error message I get: "There do not appear to be any valid recipients. Please check the names and try again. For additional assistance, please submit a ticket at to send a message without at least one valid recipient"

I have tried responding directly from the student's message and I've gone to my membership and went to their name to message them directly. Same result.

I am on the free basic service, but I never saw anything about this being taken away.

The error message tells me to file a report with support, however the system will not allow me to and closes it out. I am assuming that is because I'm on the free service.

    Hi Karen,

Thank you for posting your question in the Schoology Community.

If you are unable to message the student and pull up their name while messaging them then it is possible that they might have restricted messaging in their privacy settings. You can review this article for more information.

    Hi Paritosh,

Thank you for your comment.  Through trial and error and some experimentation with a dummy student account, I did figure this out.

I have advised my students, so they can understand how their settings affect my ability to communicate and respond to their communications.

    Thanks again!
