Repeatedly losing admin status

Seguir

I am the Technology Director for a small school, and as part of my role I also teach classes. As a director, my role requires admin access to Schoology, so I have a single account that should have administrator access for the "district" (we are a private school, and therefore a district of one school) and also has me as an instructor to a few courses.

Both times that I have logged into Schoology with my admin-level account to edit my course, on the subsequent login my account is stripped of admin rights (to a normal instructor account level). Another administrator then restored my admin rights only for this process to repeat the next time I tried to edit my courses.

I am not certain that editing my course is the cause of the loss of admin rights, but I can't think of any other variables that would be relevant.

When the school district first began using Schoology, they were advised that anyone who wanted to have admin rights to Schoology AND teach a course should make two accounts. Is this still the case, or should it be possible for an admin to reliably run courses?

    Hi Jonathan,

The reason your account reverts back to the Teacher role is due to a sync with your SIS. If your account in your SIS is under the Teacher role, this is what will map to Schoology.

To circumvent this, a separate account will need to be manually created in Schoology and the System Admin role can be assigned to this account.

The new account can be created under Tools > User Management > Create Users.

Afterwards you can link the System Admin account with your Teacher account and toggle between the two. You can reach out to your other administrator to create this account since you won’t have access to do so under your current account.

Please see this article for instructions and more information: System Admin FAQs.

Thank you for clarifying. Yes, I am listed in our SIS with the role of "Teacher," and the issue recurs consistently with the times when Schoology imports from our SIS.

When you say that the new administrator account (which the other admin will create for me) and the existing account (which I will leave as an instructor account) can be linked, what do you mean? This is different from a merge, correct?

    Hi Jonathan,

    No problem!

Yes, linking is different from merging. You can find instructions on how to link accounts here: How do I link accounts?

This will allow you to toggle between accounts by simply clicking your name in the top-right corner of the navigation bar. The account that is synced with your SIS will be under the Teacher role and your new account (that only exists within Schoology) will be able to access admin tools.

Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any further questions.
