Foreign Language - quizzes - Google Translator automatically pops up :(

Seguir

Okay so I had a Spanish teacher throw her hat in the ring spend hours on making a quiz o Schoology - only to find out by an honest student 1/2 through the day that the students all get messages from Google translator that says do you want to translate this page? We are a bring your own device district and 1:1 computing. We do not have control to shut anything down on their own machines. Very discouraged -- any ideas?

    Hello All,

We understand how Google Translate can undermine your hard work and we're sorry if it causes any frustration during your quizzes in Schoology.

Google Translate is a Google product and is not a feature within Schoology. To manage Google Translate within Google Chrome, please visit: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/173424?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en

    Thank you!

    Exact. Same. Issue.

There's a semi-workaround to prevent page translation via a head tag (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7228972/disable-chrome-translation-bar-on-my-website) but this is something Schoology would have to add.

Schoology, how do you address this issue for language teachers? Should they just not use Schoology for assessment at all?

We consider use of Google Translate as a breach of Academic Honesty so this feature would prevent us from using Schoology for an assessment.

Charles, I wonder whether you might reconsider your comment. We do understand that Translate is a Google feature, but there's a very simple method that Schoology could use to disable it via a head tag.

Your suggestion, which puts the onus on the user to turn off translation, misses the point that students might leave it enabled.

    Hi Sean,

I can understand how this would impact Language Teachers who might not want Schoology translated at all however, we would also need to consider Teachers, Schools and Districts (some of them state wide and Country-wide) that would not want this feature disabled by default in Schoology.

The number of votes for this feature indicates that there is support for it therefore we will keep it in place and searchable so that others can add-on for encouragement.

Thank you for providing clarity regarding this feature idea!

Seems like you should be able to give teachers an opt-in, though.

I'm taking this up with our account manager. It's a serious problem for many schools.

    Hi Sean,

I completely agree with you, having the choice to enable or disable it site-wide would be ideal! Please let me know if you have any difficulties contacting our account team, I am happy to help.

    Regards,

Did anyone find any resolution with this matter? We are starting with Schoology this year and it would be important to know if the translation features can be disabled!
