"Safe Exam Browser" for tests/quizzes

Seguir

I'd like more security for test-taking. Can Schoology work in conjunction with Safe Exam Browser or a similar program?

Yes, we need a way to block students from browsing and also for foreign language teachers - to prevent them from changing the language on the web page, for example in Google Chrome.

Right now, I only use the text/quiz feature as class/homework assignments or informal assessments and self-checks.

Yes, this is needed. With it I could probably get my whole school to sign up. Without it I am afraid that they will go with Moodle-for free, and not as good in so many areas-but this is very important.

Does anybody who can change this read these?

Just for fun, I did an experiment using the Faronics Insight program that allows you to view all of the computer screens on a channel (like in a computer lab). I gave the test and watched to see how many students would switch tabs on the browser to look up answers. 33% of the students did this on just this one quiz. For teachers who don't have such software or who can't monitor all the screens of computers being used to take a quiz, using the Schoology quiz/test feature is a very dangerous thing to do.

For those of you who want to limit web browsing the software I mentioned above does have the capability, on Windows, of limiting running applications to those that are on a safe list, and of limiting web sites to those that are on a safe list. This works well with Internet Explorer but Faronics has been having a hard time keeping up with Chrome - the newest versions usually only stop older versions of Chrome - however Chrome can be on your black list and not usable. Unfortunately, it is an expensive program and you would probably need a staff technologist or IT person to set it up and maintain it.

Agreed, our high school teachers have asked about this many times.

I would like to offer one other suggestion. Is it possible to have a question have automatically generated values for students to calculate given certain criteria. For example, in math and science, a student might be asked to solve a problem involving a common formula. If each time the question is asked a new values would be automatically generated and the student then performs the calculation, that would be different from other students or even the next time the student tries that question type. The teacher would only have to write one question, say using F = MA to solve, and then test would generate different values for M and A for each time the test is taken. Thanks for considering.

A lock-down feature would make Schoology so much more useful.

If you students are taking the tests/quizzes on an iPad, you can lock them into the app by setting up the "Guided Access" feature on the iPad. Basically you enter a 4 digit code into the guide access feature. Once the students are in the schoology app, they can triple click the home button, which will lock them into that app. They will not be able to leave that app or take screenshots until they bring their device up to you and you unlock the device at the end of the test. This has made it pretty difficult to cheat on tests/quizzes. I always walk around to verify that they are locked into their app by pressing the home button before they begin.

Thanks Dan Napel, for the Guided Access tip. I am glad that is working for you and your class. Have your students been able to get out of guided access by restarting their iPad? If the test parameters were set to only one attempt and non resumable one could avoid issues with students turning Guided access off and then getting back into the quiz. Also, teachers I work with are relunctant to use this feature because of the time it would take to set up large classes, have you found that this takes a large amount of extra time to set up? Thanks for sharing.

So many of our teachers refuse to use the awesome online testing feature of Schoology until this issue is addressed. Please address this!

I understand this concerns and a Safe Exam Browser will really help. However what I do with my students is non resumable timed quizzes with random order of questions/answers (all of these features already implemented in schoology) That way they can't afford loosing time while browsing for the answer and my cheating percentage till this day is (almost) 0 (they did try on the first test, but no attempts since then).

This is a high priority item for our teachers as well. They would like to use Schoology to give their SLO (Student Learning Outcome) tests that are used for their evaluations, but are worried about the overall security of the test when students have access to their browser.

High priority update! I've heard of "Respondus" doing the same thing that works with many other LMS. It would be a huge help.

You can do the blocking with additional software like LanSchool, and only allow Schoology.com, but this requires a little more work. Also, teachers have the administration of the test on their mind, so watching two pieces of software can be overwhelming in addition to test security and logistics.

Our teachers love the testing ability in Schoology, but are wary of testing with that method due to the inability of locking into the test. Please add this feature as soon as possible.
