400 Bad Request

Follow

I was using Schoology fine all day yesterday, no problems.  5 hours of work, 4 assignments completed, several posts read, several replies made.  All of a sudden I can't post anymore or open a new assignment, because I keep getting the following error:

400 Bad Request

Request Header Or Cookie Too Large

I've cleared all my cookies, tried it on multiple internet browsers, and on 3 different computers.  I can log into schoology, but the minute I attempt to open an assignment, I get this error.  How do I fix this so I can work on my class?

    Hi Ann,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue! Are you still seeing this error message?

Over the last few weeks, we have seen increased usage around the clock, breaking the record for any time in our 10-year history. As you can imagine, this has the potential to put strain on parts of Schoology that can cause service degradation for certain areas of the site. The error message you received may be due to this.

Based on the increase in usage on the Schoology platform, we are making changes to Schoology to allow us to scale our databases.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Yimei,

Yes, but is there a way to fix it? I am asking my students to log completely out of Schoology and Chrome and back in and they say it is still there or should they just try again later?

    Thank you,

    Courtney Cameron

    Hi Courtney,

Are your students seeing this error message in any specific area of Schoology?

My student has received this exact error code when they press the submit button to turn in their assignment. It essentially prevents them from turning it in

My students are getting it again today when they click on My document. It won't let them open the document.  They have tried to click on the "Can't open document, click here" and they have tried signing out and back in.  Is there a solution for this error yet?

    Thank you!

I am getting a 400 Bad Request this morning. How do I fix it?

I observed this error last week.

    Three things here

    1) How to remediate: clean all cookies / browser data and start anew. You will need to re-login everywhere though. Because it might be too disruptive, you might want to try in incognito browser mode or try to logout from schoology / clever / etc only.

    2) The root cause. Well, it is in the message. Default schoology server has a low limit on technical data sent  by Chrome (or whatever browser) along with your request. Some students do not log into schoology directly, but rather thru clever and google account and so far, and probably accumulate more bits of info to pass back and forth between browser and server as they use their account. So all in all, it exceeds the limit. Once started over, there is less info, and it fits the limit.

    3) Proper fix. Schoology needs to reconfigure their servers as following

    * allow higher limits on cookie/header size. Put 16kb instead of 8 and forget about this problem

    * provide custom error 400 page with better instructions how to remediate the problem

    * note that this problem has nothing to do with high load on the server whatsoever. The error clearly says the server has lower limit on the size of a single request. It has nothing to do with databases or volume of requests.
