How Does Resuming a Test/Quiz Work?

Follow

Students are doing a test at home and the test is timed --- 40 minutes.

Let's say the student loses their internet connection after working for 20 minutes. Instead of logging back in immediately, they take a break and log back in 10 minutes later. How much time will they have left: 10 minutes or 20 minutes?

If it is 10 minutes, then this means that their time continues even if they log off.

If it is 20 minutes, then this means that their time stops when they log off and resumes when they log back on.

In the latter case, how do you manage students starting the exam, looking at the question, logging off, logging back on, entering their answer and repeating this to circumvent the timed-aspect of the test? Is there anything option that would manage this?

    Hi Fransell,

Thank you for reaching out in the Schoology Community!

If a Test/Quiz is timed, the timer for an attempt will not pause simply because the student has navigated away from the page or logged off. In your example, the student would have 10 minutes left.

There are additional steps you can take to ensure that students are not circumventing the timer. You can disable the ability to resume attempts from Settings in your Test/Quiz. You can also set the Attempt Limit to 1 to ensure that students are not starting a quiz, previewing the questions, navigating away, and then starting a new attempt.

If you do so, students will receive this message if they try to resume an attempt:

However, please note that these settings are not available at this moment for Assessments. If you would like to prevent an Assessment from being resumable, you might want to consider using the Respondus LockDown Browser tool if it's available for your district. To find out if you have access to Respondus LockDown Browser, please contact your System Admin (located under Support Contacts in the Support tab of your footer within Schoology).

    I hope this helps!
