Instructor Q&A

Multiple step assignments...

I have a music writing assignment with multiple steps to it.  I'm only giving the students one step at a time as they go. I assigned it to them as an assignment via Google Drive Assignment.

Is it possible to add steps to my original assignment as we go?

Can they keep it as an "in progress" assignment until they are finished?

Or will I need to make more assignments with each step of the project?

    Hi Julianne,

Thank you for reaching out in the Schoology Community!

When students open a Google Drive Assignment, it makes a copy of your original document for each student. After students have opened their personal copy of the document, subsequent changes that you make to the original document (such as adding steps) will not be reflected in the student copies. Only students who open their copy after you make the changes will see the edits. You can read more about editing Google Drive Assignments within Schoology here: Troubleshooting the Google Drive Assignments App.

It sounds like you could use one of our existing tools for multiple-step assignments: Student Completion Rules. This will allow you to have an "in-progress" assignment folder to house all of the different steps, which you can make available one after another.

    I hope this helps!
