Instructor Q&A

Rejecting Assignment Submissions Because They Don't Meet Criteria

Is it possible for you to create a way for a teacher to reject or send an assignment back to a student.  We consistently have students submit a blank document or something that says that they will hand something in 'tomorrow', and basically, all this does is take it off of their overdue list.  If we leave a comment, students ignore it, or they don't look at them, so then they don't follow up on the missing work because it is no longer on the overdue list.  We tried using the 'incomplete' feature, but that doesn't make the assignment still show up on their overdue list.  It just shows in their grades that the assignment is incomplete.  Again, it gets ignored.  If we could bounce an assignment back to the student with a brief comment about how what they submitted does not meet the requirements, then their overdue list would keep that item until they submit something new.

    Hi Mrs. Fehr,

Thank you for sharing your idea in the Community!

The Assignment Document Viewer provides a great opportunity to send a document back to the student and provide comments. The comment area to the right of the main view of the submission allows you to provide a comment and upload a file which sends the student a notification and allows them to view the document from the assignment.

You can find more details about this feature from our Help Center Article: How Do I Grade Assignments

Let us know if this feature helps you achieve the goals for returning submissions to students.

My understanding of the OP is that students don't bother reading these comments, and that it still looks like they've submitted something even if they did not submit the actual assignment. She is looking for a way to actually remove the submission (unsubmit it) so that the student still knows they need to complete it correctly. I also have an issue with students either submitting a blank assignment or submitting the wrong assignment. It is no longer on their overdue list, it looks like something has been submitted in grade book, but the student has not actually submitted the correct assignment that the teacher can grade.

That is exactly what I meant, Callie.  Thank you for clarifying that for me!
