Being able to "Mute" students/change them to View Only

Follow

Students incessantly post irrelevant comments on my central InfoHub at my building. Is there a way to set students to "Read/View Only" and block their ability to comment? Edmodo has this feature and it is very useful to be able to block specific students from commenting.

    Hello All,

You can control student's ability to post updates and comments within your courses and/or groups. Here are the steps:

    - Navigate to Course Options (just below the course profile picture)

    - Find 'Other Settings'

    -      For "Post course updates" - make sure only Course/Group Admins have the green check mark

    -      For "Comment on course updates" - make sure only Course/Group Admins have the green check mark

Making these changes will remove student's ability to post Updates and/or Comments in your courses and groups.

    Hope this helps!

Please add the feature "Read/View Only" or provide some explanation why this is not part of Schoology. Moderate is a good feature, however the sizeable majority of my students post and reply well and constant oversight is not necessary. Schoology needs an option that doesn't seem all or nothing.

I couldn't agree more with Mr. Considine's request. I do not have time to moderate all posts and it is only a handful of students who need to be set to monitor. Having our only options as "all or none" is not conducive to the learning environment.

I would second this request. Many other LMS services allow marking a student as a "read only" - especially for discussions. We have specific students that are constantly making inappropriate comments.

Also, when setting a group or course to moderated, its extremely helpful if all comments note the strand they are posted to. Please add this so that it's easier to tell if a comment should be approved or not. Thanks!

Yes, I second the need for the moderated comments to actually link back to the post on which the comment was made!

I'm looking for a read-only as well! :( Our district won't let us use Edmodo and that was my fave feature of it - kids can get updates, notes, etc, but don't necessarily need to add irrelevant comments!

    Charles,

I am aware of this feature. It does NOT help if one only wants to mute specific students--primarily those who post inappropriate things. I don't want to mute ALL students, just SPECIFIC students. As mentioned in a previous post, Edmodo allows this and was a terrific feature!

    Hello Mrs. Fauble,

Thank you for clarifying your needs. Have you tried turning on Moderation for your course? This will allow you to approve posts and comments prior to them being published in the course feed.

Here's more info on moderation: https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/201002103-Course-and-Group-Moderation

If that doesn't really fit your goals, I encourage you to create a Feature Idea for your post and post it in our Feature Ideas forum: https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115006474207-Welcome-to-Schoology-Feature-Ideas

    Thanks again!

Hello Mr. Black, the post that was created does address what we would like to see. As one teacher already stated moderating individual posts is extremely time-consuming compared to being able to set one or two students to read only. Most of my students reply to others in near real time. If students need to wait for me as an example, then it might be hours after commuting and family time. Is there a particular reason why schoology does not have this feature? If there is a tech reason for it, then let us know. I can understand if there is some system issue with selecting individuals as read-only.

    Hello Mr. Considine,

Thank you very much for creating a Feature Idea to capture the intent for a 'read-only' feature in Schoology.

I'll provide the link to the Feature Idea that Mr. Considine created so that others can find it and support it.

    Thanks again!
