Show comment to student

Follow

I would like to see the show comment option as default (always selected) and see it as an option to unclick the comment if teachers would rather keep notes for themselves.

    Hi All,

We are in the process of redesigning how we handle feature ideas and we are excited to launch these changes very soon. We know that our response to all of these amazing ideas has been slow to non-existent and our top priority is to fix that! Thanks for continuing to provide amazing ideas like this one!

Keep checking the Community for updates on the new process, coming soon!

Yeah. Not sure in this age of "transparency" students would be defaulted to not see comments...

Agree! That would make it much easier.

This request is over 2 years old and still no change to this feature, which is a same. It would save time. And more than just the time involved clicking the box, the real issue is when you forget to check one or two students' boxes and their grade does not appear for them.

Totally agree that since one is typing the comment in the box, the expectation is that students are going to see it. The less likely instance is when the note is only for the teacher (or co-teacher), which would mean the box could be unchecked.

I waste so much time double checking to see if I remembered to click the box. And sure enough, I always find that I forget a couple times, which means I then have to check everyone. And since you don't get to hover to see if you checked the box, you spend time by having to actually open the comment. This is quite annoying and should be an easy fix.

How about the fact that you have to click on the comment bubble (1), then click in the box (2), type your comment (3), then click the "show to student" (4), then actually click OFF the box to close it (5). That's 5 clicks PER STUDENT.  Multiply that by 125 students, and that equals 625 clicks to make comments for one assignment.  This doesn't include all the extra clicks when you lose your scroll towards the bottom of the page. It would be terrific if they could created a page where all the students had comment windows open, so we could copy/paste and do a class worth of comments in 30 seconds instead of 10 minutes.

It be fantastic if the Schoology UI was more like School Loop's.  I wish I had a choice.

    Charles Black,

What is the status on this? It's now almost a year after you said changes were in the making. The "Show Comment to Student" should be the default.

    Thanks.

    Hello Joy,

Please review the guidelines for Feature Ideas available here: https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115006474207-Welcome-to-Schoology-Feature-Ideas:

Although we review all submissions, it’s not possible, due to the high volume of requests, to personally respond to every Feature Idea posted.
Even seemingly simple product ideas may be more complex than you might expect or may wait in line as part of a larger development schedule. We thank you for your patience!

You can follow the progress of new features via our Product Roadmap.

    Thank you!

    Four years later...has anyone discovered a work-around?

My colleagues would tell you my "work-around" sounds like "click click click click click click..."  How can something so simple as changing a default value be so complex?

This would be extremely helpful for teachers who spend a great deal of effort supplying feedback to students. These comments are often better indicators of mastery and ways for students to improve than a simple grade ever will be. I don't believe our teachers are keeping their private notes about students in their gradebook and so making comments visible to students as the default provides better transparency for students about their development and growth. I would highly recommend this be prioritized.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE change it so the "Show to student" box is checked by default.  Currently, this "opt-in" feature of having to check the box to show a comment instead of an "opt-out" feature if a teacher does not want to show a comment encourages teachers to give less detailed feedback because it requires them to click the box every single time.  When I give a sentence or two of feedback to each of my students, that's over 150 clicks I have to add to my routine.

By not listening to user feedback and requests (going back years, it seems) and being satisfied with the current set up, Schoology is implicitly demonstrating its acceptance of a sub-standard product and user experience for its students, which could be detrimental to their academic growth.

I and my colleges have been waiting years for this improvement. Today, I challenged my web class (9th-12th graders) to find the code that would be required in HTML. They spent a few minutes researching and were able to find a solution. Its a simple addition of code in HTML, which is highlighted in yellow on the students work below. I'm sure it would be similar to whatever code Schoology uses. This opened up a great discussion on focusing on the user when designing web pages. Students and myself had a hard time determining the pros of not having the checkbox checked by default. I wish Schoology would consider the user in this feature.

There is literally no bigger frustration of mine in regards to Schoology. I grade hundreds of things a week, working so hard to leave feedback for students...I have to click this hundreds of times...obviously I'll make a mistake here or there...students won't see comments...sometimes on important things they need to fix...it's maddening!

Our teachers would greatly appreciate this feature improvement.  The ability to toggle this feature on or off would increase teacher efficiency and frequency of written feedback.  Hoping this feature request could be pushed out before the end of the school year!

Please fix this immediately!!  So frustrating and a huge time waste to have to click 'Display to Student' for each comment when the comments are a part of the feedback/teaching process!!
