Parent Notifications for Student Events

Follow

We are a new school to Schoology and I am shocked to discover today that parents can not receive notifications of events which occur in their children's classes or groups. This page from the Parent Guide (https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/201000803-Personal-Account-Parent-Notifications) says, ""Schoology sends you email notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. These notifications pertain to the school, courses, and groups in which you participate." What about courses in which your child participates?

We are a school and our parents don't take classes - their children do! Our parents expect to be able to receive notifications when new materials, assignments and updates are posted to their kids' courses. Yes, Schoology will send them a daily (or weekly) digest of new data but, in today's connected world, many of our parents want more than that.

Please give parents the ability to receive (and control) notifications for each of their childrens' courses.

Does no one else think this is a good idea?

We have just started enrolling parents as well, and many (of our elementary parents at least) are complaining that they can't receive individual update emails from their child's courses and groups. Parents should at least be given the choice to toggle this on and off. It is deceiving the way the parent account looks, that they do have a notification menu... most parents go there first, and think that by turning on all the notifications, that they'll get them... but they aren't actually enrolled in any classes, so they get none except Daily. There should be an option under the children's notification settings to turn on/off/custom notifications for particular courses/groups/buildings.

Completely agree! Especially the lower school parents. They just want email notifications of updates to their child's classes. Schoology just says that they should be logging in and viewing as their child. It would really help busy parents if they could at least get email notifications for class updates, or could at least have the option.

I have started to have teachers copy their updates and paste it into a course message to all parents. It doesn't send an external email, just a Schoology message. But, depending on how the parents have their notifications set up, Schoology should send them an email notification that Teacher sent you a message on Schoology. The content is included in that email notification. If its too long, it allows them to click and enter Schoology from there.

Of course, this causes the teacher to duplicate her efforts. We want to teachers teaching and not worrying about all this.

There should be a way for parents to OPT into getting classroom update notifications. This would be especially helpful for LS.

We will allow parents to join groups, so that they can then get those update notifications, but we do not allow parents to be enrolled in courses. We feel this may deter students from participating in class discussions, etc.

This is the exact question that I have! Did anyone ever figure out a way to send notifications to parents every time a teacher posts something new to their child's course?

I need the same feature. Parents should be able to receive all the notifications and set those they want to receive. For example, if my child is going low in a certain course, I would want to follow every homework sent or event published for that course so that I could help my child.

Hope this feature is added promptly.

    Thanks

Any update on this? Complete agree with OP - this is urgently needed.

Also agree that parents should have more access to receiving and configuring notifications - both digest, in-app, and email - in their PARENT ROLE. While it's nice that Schoology extends a "personal" role for parents, the emphasis on that over their parent role seems really disproportionate to real-life usage.

It would be nice to see more options for parent notifications, with similar customizable opt out/in by course/group that other members have (and the option for the admin to turn these off by course/group/school etc.)

I would like to second the original poster on this one.  I was shocked to learn that classroom updates were not being sent to parents as well.
