Student self-assessment Rubrics

Follow

Wouldn't it be GREAT if on an assignment, students could grade themselves on the same rubric the teacher is using? I would love them to be able to use the interactive rubric and justify their self-assessment. Teachers can then open the assignment and the students' self-assessment rubric and comment on that.

I agree. Student self-assessment rubrics would be a great tool to help students reflect about their own performance and internalize the learning process.

Agree! Our Japanese elementary school teachers value students' self assessment for most of the class activities too.

Agreed! Is there any work around for this until as a temporary solution? Anyone have any ideas?

Yes! This important tool would be quite helpful in giving students evaluative ownership over their work.

Self reflection is so important. Hopefully there can be some movement by the development team to implement this!

I would love this! Self-assessment is a huge part of my course. Currently they have to leave Schoology, complete their assessment in google docs, and submit it that way. Obviously that doesn't allow them to get the automatic grade, as I then have to go in and grade it based on their grades. I would LOVE a self-assessment feature!

I agree forallrubrics does this but does not have other types of assessment, if only we could have combo upsize!

My way of doing this will be having "paper" journals where the rubric is printed and they self-assess and hand-in OR sometimes take the rubric into forallrubrics for electronic recording as this allows peer, self and teacher assessment all tracked.

I agree with making a self evaluating tool for students to access and complete online.  Less paper!!

I agree this addition would be beneficial to allowing students to take ownership in their learning by using the rubric to assess themselves or classmates.

Yes, please! This would be an excellent addition - self-evaluation is a key part of the process.  It would be great if this were part of their submission.

Would love to have my students complete a self-assessment rubric which then linked to powerschool. This would be a very helpful communication piece.

Martin Tremblay makes a great point. John Hattie's "Visible Learning" (2009) revealed that self-assessment is BY FAR the most high-impact strategy (effect size of 1.44) across pedagogy AND assessment, to say nothing of non-didactic measures. The ability for students to assess themselves on a rubric and to provide evidence for that grade should be TOP OF MIND in the next release of the Schoology toolset.

My school district really wants the self-assessment rubric to be a feature students can use. Any progress on developing this?

Yes! Plus, I would love the ability to easily track students' self-evaluation improvement so that students could see their progress over the course of the year on their self-evaluations/self-evaluated standards just as easily as I can see their progress on other various standards that I evaluate.

I agree - having explicit student self-assessment functionality would be awesome. The closest I've come to getting students to self-assess on rubrics in Schoology is to use the new Highlight Image question in the teal Assessments puzzle. I load in the rubric as an image for the question, set it to 0 points (to encourage actual self-assessment), and then students are able to mark up the rubric and submit their response.

I agree as well! I have used the highlight image question type to do self-assessments on rubrics, but that can be difficult to use since it takes so long for Schoology to re-draw what the student drew during the grading process. I wish there was a way to have it draw everything all at once instantaneously, instead of watching it slowly re-draw what each student drew on their self-assessment.
