Anonymous Comments for Discussion Threads

Follow

We have teachers that would like to run certain discussions in their Schoology courses in an anonymous mode. Please consider adding a feature that would allow teachers to turn on anonymous posts for students feel more comfortable in commenting during specific discussions.

Yes, please! It would be helpful it there was an additional options for students to remain anonymous to one another, but the teacher could still see who each student was.

This feature would be great, especially for special education students who would feel more comfortable if other students did not know who they are.

This would be really important to me as a teacher knowing that some students won't post their real thoughts or won't post at all if it means they'll get criticised or if they think their ideas aren't good enough. Anonymous posting would encourage more students to have a voice.

Yes please add. My students are still emailing me with questions and won't post on this. If I tell them to post only on this if they have a question, I'm worried they won't ask at all. They don't seem to want to let others know where they are struggling.

Yes, please. I teach writing courses where students are afraid to criticize each others' work and this would be perfect for my classes.

This would be a perfect opportunity for students to journal their thoughts on the lesson or activity without each student having to send an e-mail/upload an assignment to the teacher. I love doing assignments through discussion board because the work is all in one place and you don't have to open attachments; however, I could use this feature much more if anonymous posts were made available.

Yes, this would be great. Students sometimes feel uncomfortable asking their trickiest questions.

We used the anonymous discussions feature available in our TurnItIn.com account for several years; however, this summer when we integrated the TurnItIn "External Tool" (not the app) in Schoology, the discussions feature became unavailable. What a loss!  Having the ability to make anonymous posts in discussions is critical.  Students we surveyed in the 2014-15 school year stated overwhelmingly that they felt more comfortable sharing their true thoughts about topics or disagreeing when their posts were anonymous.  They also felt that they were getting more honest and authentic feedback from peers when their peers were anonymous.  The teacher, of course, could see the posters' names, which assured that students' comments were on topic and academically focused.

So, where are we on this feature? It really can't be that hard to implement, and many teachers are saying it would be veey helpful. This is basically all I need Schoology for. Hope it happens soon.

This would be amazing. Any updates on whether or not this is a possibility???

Thank you to the person who recommended doing this in Turnitin. It would be ideal to have this feature available in Schoology where students do everything else for my course, but I will use Turnitin in the meantime!

But, know that if you use the "external tool" for TurnItIn through Schoology, the discussion feature is not available.  Huge hit.

Our district subscribed to TurnItIn (web - platform) and teachers LOVED the discussion tool for so many reasons, especially for peer reviews. The social pressure to not point out ways students should improve their writing was eliminated by the anonymous commenting feature. Students felt they could be more honest in their feedback, and those who were reading reviews found them to be more precise and helpful. The teacher could still see the author of the comments, of course.

But now that our district is requiring us to access TurnItIn through Schoology as an "external tool", teachers can no longer access that valuable TurnItIn discussion tool at all.  (And if they try to access TurnItIn through the website, we get double-charged on account usage....)

There should be an option that the teacher can see who wrote it, but the other students can't (confidential). In addition, another option to make it completely anonymous so teacher nor student can see who wrote it (anonymous).
