Option of having work that student has submitted a revision for and work already marked with a grade show up in Reminders area when student submits to the dropbox or completes assignment.

I am finding it frustrating to track work that students turn in after a grade has been given.

Example 1: Student turns in first submission into the dropbox - I grade it and return it to them with comments to improve. When they turn in a revision this should show up in my Reminders section as something that I need to grade.  Now it only shows up in notifications which I find hard to track.

Example 2: Student does not turn in an assignment on time - has a zero entered for a grade.  Student completes assignment later. This assignment should also show up in my Reminders so that I can be taken right to what I need to grade.  Now it only shows up in notifications which are hard to keep track of I find.  Same holds here for quizzes - as if I have entered a zero - when the student does take the quiz it still shows them to have a zero.  I'd like to be send a reminder to grade it - then if I choose to leave it a zero or not is up to me. As of right now I don't get much notice that it has been turned in at all.

These could also be options that are available so that teachers could turn them on or off based on their needs and grading policies.

Alternative ideas are to be able to flag notifications somehow so that I know which I have dealt with (graded) and which are new and need attention. Also to have them separated out by student/assignment rather than clumped together as I have no way of knowing which student or students have new submissions when I get to the assignment page.

  Students often send me revisions or I make them resubmit assignments for my class. I would imagine your workflow is to teach the students to message me (the teacher) to say..."please regrade or grade my assignment Mr. So and So...." However, what would work for me when grading assignments is that there would be an additional filter when grading assignments called "Revision Submitted - Graded" and "Revision Submitted - Ungraded." This would be in the list with the attached. Does this make sense?

  I have the same issue.  It would be helpful to have some kind of flag that signifies that a new revision as been submitted after a previous submission has been graded.

  The inability to do this has made grading a nightmare.  At this point, that one issue makes Schoology not worth the money.

  I agree completely. I am having the same problem. If I want to check if a student has submitted a revision, I have to manually go back an individually check every assignment. That is massively time consuming. Surely there could be a very easy way to show which students have submitted revisions. Just as assignments submitted through the dropbox show up as "needs grading," revisions could be similarly marked.

  This is really slowing me down! I could see this not being a big deal in some high schools or colleges, but middle school kids resubmit stuff all of the time. One thing I do for now, is create an assignment called "Make Up Box" where students submit work. But then it gets confusing because they start turning in all their assignments to the make up box. I really hope Schoology will consider this request!

  One thing I have found that helps is to sign up for ALL academic notifications to come to my email. Then I grade by clicking through these for all dropbox and discussion assignments, rather than from the reminders area in schoology. This helps greatly as it lets me know when a revision is submitted and when a student posts to a graded discussion after I've entered a zero.  After clearing all of these from my email inbox I only have quizzes/tests to grade in my reminders area.  Then the only trick part then is going through the gradebook to find all the quizzes/tests that have been submitted late.  (Which shows up as a little symbol in the gradebook).  This has helped me quite a bit with handling as I do get notification of all redo's this way.  Now if the quizzes would just show up somewhere that would certainly help.

  Cari,  I appreciate the idea.  I do the same thing, but wouldn't it make more sense for a "Needs Grading" pop up like it does when the assignment is first submitted?  It shouldn't take much more in terms of computer coding to allow for this to happen.

  I use the method described by Mr. Camp above to get notifications of late work (0 has already been entered) by the students.  I would appreciate a "needs grading" pop-up for revisions so that it could cut down on the amount of time it takes to go back and forth from the messages to the assignment.

  I also would appreciate being notified in the item needs grading section when a new revision is added as often I miss this assignments and I have to get students to email me if they turn in a new revision. Thanks

  I agree wholeheartedly! I use this type of 'feedback-loop' for most assignments. It is very uncommon for students to be 'finished' after their first attempt. Instead, they submit their draft, I mark their effort and return for improvements.

  For example, on a 4-point scale, they might be required to achieve a minimum 3 score, but their first draft is a 1. Currently, when they resubmit their file, it is not clear from the assignment page. I see the list of students and who has achieved a score of 3 and who has not, but that is all. I spend a lot of time clicking through every single assignment.

  In another LMS that I used, one of the features within each assignment, was the ability to sort submissions based on the date submitted. In this example, I will know the last time I have checked student work on a particular assignment. Then, I would just have to quickly check for submissions made after this date.

  Alternatively, I use the 'Completion' rules quite often. I would like to be able to filter the list of submissions based on whether students have 'met the Completion rules' or not. This way, I would only be presented with the list of students who still had not reached the final target for each assignment.

  It has become so bad that I avoid grading because it is so tedious! My poor students - help them!!!

  Students are starting to notice that we (teacher and student) are having difficulty locating late or resubmitted work. It's making grading time a scavenger hunt of clicks and messages. I am thinking about telling students that all late work must be sent through the messaging component only. I think if I were still teaching high school, I could work around this problem. Middle school philosophy, in many schools, says " do or redo."

  Please Please Please talk with your developers, UN guys, and everyone else to enable some type of filter when grading to show students resubmissions. I LOVE SCHOOLOGY!!! Hec - I have gotten half the staff setup with Schoology at our school and we didnt even adopt it for the district. But the resubmissions without "Needs Grading" is slowing me down so bad....this is a must for middle school!

  Agree completely: For some of my teachers who have 5 classes of 30 students, they turn off notifications (email and text) because they regularly go into Schoology to receive that information. In an assignment, they depend on the "Needs Grading" note/highlighted alert to know what submissions to assess. However, many of their assignments allow for multiple student submissions.

  Here is the problem: When a student submits work a second (or third) time, it does not show "Needs Grading" or something like "New Submission" to flag the ones they need to assess.

  A lot of the late work problem could be solved if they included a button in the grading system comment box. They have green and red for missing work, but neither will lower their grade. Only putting in a zero will lower the grade and then Schoology thinks it's graded. If we were able to use the red button as a missing assignment, and have it go against their grade, the issue would be solved. To my knowledge, the buttons are only indicators and do not count as a grade. Our old grading program had a code for late work that was included in the final grade, late work that was excluded from the final grade, and work that was excluded all together. It would be so nice if Schoology could come up with a button that would enable us to have the missing score count against their grade, you still show that there has been no assignment turned in. That way when the student does submit or possibly resubmit, we would get notified.

  Count me in, this has been quite difficult to track, causing several students who actually turned in late work to receive a failing grade on their report card. Since we use a different grade book, I have to had write grade changes for all of these students. It really does make me reconsider my use of this software.

  Agreed - The "resubmission" reminder only alerts you of the possibility of needing to re-grade a previously submitted/graded assignment. The biggest issue is when a grade of "zero" is entered for an incomplete / missing assignment prior to receiving a submission from the student at all.
  
  In that case, your hands are completely tied - if you fill a zero, you will never receive a reminder of a subsequent submission; if you don't, students will never know their accurate course grades. To make matters worse, if you fill zeroes outside of Schoology in, say, your PowerSchool gradebook, Schoology will just wipe them out again with the next sync. Thus, this bug is incredibly frustrating and wastes HUGE amounts of time!

  I agree with Zach! So I have read 19 'answers' which are all basically saying the same thing.........does anyone ever read this forum, or are we just soothing each other? How can the same issue be posted 20 times for more that a year, and not be addressed by schoology?

  I love using the platform, but not being able to quickly distinguish re-submissions or eliminate the problem with a '0' grade are very problematic and make a teacher question the usefulness of schoology. Keeping up with the grading is time-consuming enough already......

  It is issues like this that have made grading through Schoology so questionable that I won't even try it.
  I need to have confidence in the system. I can't have issues such as this forcing me to double check and triple check grades. No time for that.

  This issue of schooogy trumping powerschool (which in our school is the official gradebook) is insane. Having to constantly go back and forth between the two platforms to make sure that grades are correct is a waste of time and frustrates students, parents and teachers.

  Noting that this thread started in 2013, provides evidence that schoology is aware of this issue and has not acted. There are many posts to this thread that provide solutions to this problem. It is now time for Schoology to act.

  Amen! I have had to use the Schoology Gradebook to help me scour for the submission icon in the upper right portion of each students assignment block...if the grade shows zero but the icon shows they submitted something, I go into the actual assignment and re-grade.

  Yes, grading takes so much more time on Schoology because I can't be sure that I haven't missed a submission without going through and checking each assignment.

  There is a reminder generated but there is no way of knowing which student or students re-submitted the work. Locating their work requires scrolling through the entire set of student submissions in an assignment to find the re-submitted work. I can't even tell how many students sent work so I have to scroll student by student all the way to the end every time. At the end of the grading cycle, it can be impossible to do this for all assignments with re-submits in every class, especially with over 150 students to track. Therefore a student's (usually several students) final grades for the period end up being wrong and a paper grade change must be generated. We do not have Enterprise so that may be different for other users but once the official report is sent to parents, I would think this would be a problem even in Enterprise. There are also UIL considerations when grades are wrong at the end of a grading period. If I miss a re-submit, I usually will not know this until the student reports to me that he/she did not get credit for it.

  Dang, I see that the last comment was in 2015. And this still has not been resolved? I am having huge issues with re-submissions. Is this not a feature by now?
