Student Journal feature

Follow

I would like to see a journal feature on Schoology, where students could add weekly journal posts directly on Schoology, and only the teacher of the course could read the entries. This feature would give the teacher a way to track the progression of each student's posts.

Please implement this! I could think of tons of ways to use this-- this feature could even serve as students' class notebooks.  I know there's Google Docs integration, but the more self-contained an environment Schoology can provide, the happier my students (and I) will be.  (Thanks!)

I think this would be fantastic! I already do a daily journal in my class, and it's one of the few things they are having to do on paper. Some of my students have already expressed an interest in trying to keep their journals in Schoology.

This would be a great reformatting of the blog feature. I'm currently having my kids blog about their Conceptual Physics class, but would like to have each entry linked to my course and gradebook so that I can comment and assign grades accordingly. Being able to comment privately would be clutch.

Many of our teachers used the Journal feature in Moodle, and it's one of the (very few) things they miss from that system.

I journal in class everyday and we have Chromebooks. I would love to not have to put their Mead Composition notebooks in the back of the class. Having them log in to do their journal would be optimal.

I would love to see this journal feature. Moodle has one and it is a fabulous way to communicate with individual students. I used it for Warm Ups in the classroom each day. I asked Schoology and they don't have this feature, but I hope they consider it soon!!!

I would LOVE this feature as well. I use it all the time in Moodle and it's the one thing that I've found lacking in Schoology vs Moodle. We sometimes write about personal things and I don't want other students seeing what the rest of the class writes. You could even just add an extra button to the dialogue feature that would allow the teacher to hide other student's answers from the rest of the class.

I just figured out a way to do it! I created a one question short answer quiz. That way I can grade the students and give feedback without having the rest of the class see what the others wrote. It's not idea but it is better than nothing.

Yes would definitely love this feature. In the meantime we will have to use the messaging service as a compromise.

I would like this as well. I hope to have my students do some metacognitive journal as they progress in my courses. I could then use this as an additional method to gauge their understanding.

I agree with the others. I have my students do a journal on their computers but they have to submit it as a document. A journal feature would be a great time saver.

I would love to have a "Journal" feature in Schoology. I used this feature quite a bit in Moodle, and it is one aspect that is missing in Schoology. I am very disappointed that Schoology does not have this feature. It would be fantastic if this feature was implemented into the program.

A journal feature would be a wonderful and welcomed addition to Schoology.

I agree that a journal feature is needed. I would love for the students to have a dialogue journal only I could see and comment on. Currently, the work arounds are cumbersome.

I wanted the same thing and came across this in my search.  It's a fellow educator's method for journaling using Schoology.

Hope this helps!  I haven't used it yet but plan to in the fall.

Same here.  I use a journal in my class and our district has moved to Schoology and would love to be able to have the students add their daily journal entries on schoology.

It has been three years since this feature was requested. Looks like It is not possible for them to do.

I also would like to see an online journal feature implemented. Ideally, it would incorporate elements of a test/quiz, discussion, and online submission but would be unique. The link above to "Reflective Journaling in Schoology with Discussion Threads" was very helpful and doable but lacks a few aspects that would make journaling really soar. Here are my suggestions:

    1) Make grading optional but allow for easy determination about whether students have submitted. I don't want to grade journal reflections but wish to be able to easily remind students who haven't updated recently.

    2) Make it cumulative so teacher and student can see past entries. However, it should be obvious which posts have been read.

    3) Allow for easy response by teacher and student and allow teacher to quickly and easily access all students in a class with an Arrow or 'Next'.

    4) Allow upload of pictures/videos or making links.

    5) It needs to be private between teacher and student.

    6) Setup for a whole class should be as simple as clicking a button that creates a journal for every student. However, individual creations should still be allowed. I could see some teachers wanting each student to have more than one type of journal. However, I wouldn't envision doing that. One per student would be all I need.

A journal option would be great. Please keep in mind there should be some sort of confidentiality aspect so that no one but teacher and student can see it, keeping in mind that many parent's can see student work...if students are journaling about stress in their lives, etc it would be nice to tell them only the teacher will see it so they feel free to be open and honest about feelings, etc.

Please add a journal feature.  Students who study the IB Diploma, Middle Years Programme and most GCSE and A-level Computer Science or Design courses need to submit e-Portfolio's and keep a process / progress journal.  We use schoology for assignments, progress checks, delivering content, but must find another app to meet the journal requirement.  At some point it will not be feasible to maintain two online resources for managing the course. We are looking at Seesaw  https://web.seesaw.me/ as a tool for students to manage their e-Portfolio and as a means of keeping a process journal. Recommended by Computing at School http://www.computingatschool.org.uk/  As far as confidentiality, teachers must approve each entry before it can be published or shared, and it does not need to be shared as it can remain confidential.

Yes please! This would be great!

Another work around is to individually assign a discussion. It's cumbersome though, typing the name to create one for each student. A drop down box of student names would be great!
