Ability to edit multiple instances of a course material when it is copied to other courses

Follow

It would be great if there was a way to edit every instance of an assignment at the same time. For example - I create an assignment without a due date, I have to go into every course to add the due date. When I use "Copy to Course," I thought I could have three instances of the same assignment for each section.

    Hi Everyone,

I am excited to announce that we have released a new feature that will allow you to take multiple sections of the same course and link them together so that they can be managed from a single course profile, including making it easier to manage content across those sections. You can read more about this feature here: https://support.schoology.com/hc/en-us/articles/206738477

Thank you all for your feedback!

    Best,
    Ryan

I know that the ability to edit multiple instances of an assignment copied to multiple courses is the number one most requested feature (or close to it).  For good reason!  Would it be possible to have a master copy of assignments, test, documents, etc. in resources, and if something is changed on the master then it rolls out to all of its copies?  I'm sure it's not as simple as everyone thinks it might be, but it is so, so time consuming to copy and edit things for six courses.

It would be great if you could have a "parent" course in which any edits *can* be pushed out to "child" sections. Including added assignments, changes to assignments, etc. Ideally, the user would have the option not to push a change to certain sections to allow for differentiation if needed. For example, maybe Section 1 is comprised of advanced students who need a different due date on an assignment than those in Section 2...

Or another option would be to have this function built into resources. (Thought it wouldn't work for deadlines, if I catch a typo somewhere this would be a good solution...)

If I put an item in my resources folder, and then update it there, I'd love to be able to push this update to all instances of the item in my account...

Would it be possible to be able to link the content rather than copy it from course to course?  If you placed the content in the first course and then could link to it rather than copy it to the other courses, it would change if you updated it in the first course.

This idea and supportive change in Schoology would increase my efficiency. I have multiple classes in the same topic and then different levels within the classes (equates to different assignments). With the current system, I have to go in and assign each assignment to a Tuesday/Thursday class and then to the Monday/Wednesday class, and then further break down the levels, to keep up with our workflow. Huge time-stealer and requires lots of focus to make sure each day is correct.

If you could even add in the "Assign to" feature when we copy the assignment, this would save lots of time and streamline this process further. Love this update idea. Please consider implementing.

The "typo" point is excellent, Anna Otto!

Yes! Yes! Yes!!! Much needed feature. It is so time consuming and frustrating to have to change for each course I teach!

Yes! Rather than having copied assignments being the same (eg. links to one master copy or parent/child relationships) perhaps it would be possible to keep track of "linked assignments" once they are Copied to Course or copied to multiple courses from Resources. At that point an option or prompt when modifying an assignment would be a check box to "update linked Assignments." Sometimes that is needed (eg. updating the instructions or an embedded link across multiple Courses) and sometimes not (eg. modified instructions for different Courses.) I think an optional process would be better than automatic.

I really like Eric Hall's suggestion. Post the assignment one time and copy to courses with all settings (due dates, categories, grade scale etc) copying by default. If an adjustment is needed to the assignment after posting--to then have the option of "update all copies" would be HUGE! Please, please consider this .

This is one of the few issues I have with Schoology and would make me even more likely to push using Schoology in other classrooms in our district.

I have the same difficulty with resource pages with lots of links and videos. If I wish to add a link, I have to re-edit each page in four classes.
I would love to have a way to either keep items (assignments, discussions, pages, etc.) linked, or to un-link them to be able to edit separately if needed.

I agree with everything this thread is about. As a middle school teacher who has 5 of the same class, this would be huge to happen. Combine it with 2 different modified assignments (making 3 total) for each assignment, and that means I get to check certain things in 15 different places in order for the assignments to "work".

Yes. Maybe the "master" could be denoted by a special color or symbol. I know that Materials in Resources don't behave the same way as a live course but maybe there is a way to create a master course area in courses or resources that could house these master courses.

I think the best solution to this creating one course with sections or using groups so that you don't have to do anything twice or thrice.

I use google drive to write up my assignments. Then in Schoology I post a brief description in the assignment and link to the actual paper in my google drive. This allows me to make one edit to fix any instance of that assignment but if I have different classes using the work then they can have different due dates or time frames etc. But I would like schoology to have a hierarchy of class, section, and then grading groups. This way whatever I put in the class goes to all the sections but I could make different due dates for each section or even hide it so one section does not do it. This would make it so that if I have teach one subject (class) then I could use sections and divide it into periods and then divide that class into groups for group work.

It would also be nice to see something like Rjenda where you can pull up the planner/calendar, create the assignment, and then choose different due dates for the different classes. All on the same screen...rather than going into each course to assign the different due dates.

I also have the same problem ! I wonder if there could be something like a "shortcut to course" rather that a "copy to course" Imagine a folder in resources, copied to various courses. Then when I update the folder it is not automatically updated in the courses, I have to go to every course to do the same change. I image something like a shortcut so when you update the folder in resources it would be automatically updated in each of the courses. I wounder if this can be an option in the future !

I like Gustavo's idea very much. In fact, it would be great to have a teacher's "Assignment" page with all active assignments, due dates, and attached files/links that would make coordinated adjustment easy.
Thanks, Julie! Keep up the great work.

MY #1 COMPLAINT..... I have 6 of the same courses and spend so much time each week having to make global changes individually to each course. This is the one main thing that irritates me about Schoology and seems to be behind the times. There has to be a way for the copied material to be changed all at once..... I'm seeing these suggestions from over a year ago, and it seems nothing has been done to improve this.

You are correct. Schoology has continued to tell our it department that they are working on it, and continue to push back a release date. I am at the point where i dont believe they care about the community posts, or their paid customers. Until they start losing customers to well done products like canvas or desire2learn... well, this is what my district gets for signing with the cheapest option...
