Ability to provide comments for each question in new Assessments

Follow

Currently, I believe we cannot provide comments to individual questions on the new assessments. This is critical to provide students feedback for particular items.

Old test/quizzes has this feature. Can we bring this to the new assessments too?

None

This feature (the ability to add comments in the new assessments)  is highly important to quality, multi-modal feedback to students in a blended learning classroom. This is what makes feedback more meaningful for the students and actually helps them learn from their mistakes.

I'm so frustrated.  I made an "assessment" and had 115 kids take it.  Now, I have no way of writing feedback on the question I asked.  Wish I'd known this ahead of time and I would have put this in as  'test or quiz' where I have the ability to do that.  Seems very silly not to have this option in both places.  What's the point of having a separate assessment selection?

The feature of view/grade by question is wonderful, but not what we are requesting. Why would assessments be created without the ability to provide feedback to questions? It seems that a teacher was not consulted when creating assessments. Assessments has way more question features then test/quiz, but is lacking in the ability to provide feedback. When is providing feedback going to be added into production? This should be an easy feature to work on as it is already a part of test/quiz.

    Hi Emily,

    Thank you for your questions!

In order to provide the ability to comment on Assessment questions, there first must be a view of individual assessment questions, which doesn't currently exist in Schoology Assessments. That is what is currently being developed: question view along with grading. Once that's complete, then we can start to plan commenting, which is a very popular feature for Test/Quizzes and is highly requested for Assessments.

Test/Quizzes will be available while we continuously improve Assessments to surpass the abilities of Test/Quizzes.

We recommend that Schoologites click Follow on each section of our Product Roadmap to stay up to date on other key features we're building for Assessments:

    Thanks again for your questions!

I just created a course for new students to our school who I will not see face to face.  They have small assessments at the end of each module and a large one at the end.  I did NOT know that we couldn't comment or I would have used the old quiz feature.  This needs to programmed ASAP so I can give specific and timely feedback to these students!

Dianne (et. al.) I agree that this feature will be incredibly powerful and useful!  As both a teacher and as an administrator, I see the Assessments in Schoology as a sorely-needed upgrade to Test/Quiz materials. The technology-enhanced items replicate Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium features like drag-and-drop, highlighting text, manipulating graphs... and in my eyes, the inability to comment on them makes it even more like the big, important, end-of-year state tests that they resemble. :)

For assignments where I wish to offer a great deal of written feedback, I use (and highly recommend!) Google Drive Assignments. This embeds a Google Doc in the assignment, automagically makes copies for all students (so they don't wreck your template or waste time making their own copy), and allows you to interact with the Google Docs from within Schoology. The commenting features already available in Google Docs are there for you to highlight and margin-note to your heart's content!

Included in the plans for comments, please allow for teachers to give audio feedback as well as written - and the ability to record directly within the comment, rather than having to record outside of Schoology, and then upload the audio as currently is the case for all questions. As a language teacher, this is very important for students to be able to hear the language spoken whenever possible.

Soon it will be two years since the first request in what is a key feature for techers and students. Honestly, and respectfully, I can't figure out how could anybody with experienca as a teacher neglect this issue. I'm sorry guys, but you are just taking too long in making important adjustments in your platform. I must be following a half dozen of other key pending issues, that date from years and haven't been solved yet.

I agree with Mr. Rich about the gDrive Assignments...it's a great option to provide valuable feedback to students. And when you attach a rubric to the gDrive Assignment it's even more powerful!  However, this is not a solution for providing feedback on Assessments.  Teachers in my district really like the tech-enhanced question types of Assessments.  But they are constantly asking when there will be an option for providing feedback on individual questions.  Most will not use the Assessments until this feature is added.  The Schoology engineers word hard on providing us all with enhancements (thank you!) but my whole district is hoping that adding the ability for a teacher to provide vital feedback via comments on Assessment questions will be one enhancement that happens very soon!

This feature is critical to our faculty — we utilize the features provided by the assessments in some very advanced ways, and when we can't provide feedback on student work, the usefulness of administering these tests and quizzes is greatly diminished.

How we need this feature. I use it to provide positive feedback on students' translation work and give much-needed help for a confusing point in their learning of a foreign language. They need to see the comment in the very presence of the work on the assessments. Please consider returning this wonderful feature via an update at the earliest possible time. Thank you very much.

I second what Lori says above; as a language teacher, the ability to provide feedback on individual translation questions is vital. Using another platform, as someone suggested above, is not a possibility at our school. Without this feature we are forced either into time-consuming work-arounds, or to just not give feedback at all. This is really hurting my students' ability to learn from their assessments. Please add this feature soon!

Our composition classes have been devastated by the new format. Losing the ability to give individual and specific comments on student writing makes assessments nearly worthless. Because we lost a valuable feature, teachers are now forced to improvise with time-consuming work-around methods. Did anyone ask for teacher recommendations before these changes were implemented?

I agree, the ability to comment on specific questions is absolutely critical. Until this feature is available, I can't use the new Assessments tool. Please keep the old Quiz/Test tool active until this feature is available!

This is a huge loss.  We need to ability to explain to individual students what their errors are.  I doubled my grading time by typing my comments on a document, then copying and pasting them to the Comment Box next to the grade in the Gradebook, only to have those all disappear this week!  This is a critical tool that we need reinstated.  Please!

I am very disappointed that I can't provide feedback for my students in the new computer-graded assessments. There are two features that I have previously relied upon: giving individual feedback on questions and having automatic feedback on MC questions. When students make an error, simply seeing the correct answer doesn't help them learn from their mistakes. In questions involving calculations or multi-step reasoning a student won't be able to understand their error from simply seeing the correct answer. The automatic feedback feature was a great way to help students figure out where they had made a mistake - particularly in computation.

From a teacher's perspective, the lack of space for feedback has doubled grading time because in order to give the necessary feedback I need to type it into a word document and from there copy/paste in the gradebook or a student email or an uploaded assignment. The feedback is now in a separate document that doesn't have the question and so the student can't connect it to the original misunderstanding or error. A lot of time spent that only benefits a few students who open both documents simultaneously. This is so very frustrating!

Please put these features back into the computer graded assessments!

    Charles,

You suggested that we follow the roadmap.  I just checked.  View/grade by question has been completed, but there is nothing in research and/or development about commenting on individual questions.  I am going back and forth right now with a student who believes I graded his assessment incorrectly.  I did not, but am unable to leave feedback for him where it makes sense (on the actual question).

This is not a "it would be nice if ..." feature idea.  This is a "we NEED this ASAP" feature.  How do we communicate that to to schoology team?

I've virtually stopped using the assessment tool, except for multiple choice questions and won't begin using it again until this feature is added.

However, I teach math so I also don't use the test/quiz tool because it doesn't allow students to enter math.

    Hi Mrs. Kuryla,

Thank you for taking the time to submit this feedback.

Please rest assured that we value and closely monitor all of our community forums.

In the meanwhile, you can enable students to enter equations and math symbols in test/quizzes. To do so, check the setting to Allow rich-text answers for students at the question-level.

If this setting is enabled, students will see a number of options in the rich-text editor when submitting their response.

Clicking Equation will prompt a pop-up where they can access a full math keyboard.

    I hope this helps!

    Best,
