Some students cannot join groups

Follow

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone can help me.

Schoology has been annoying me recently....some students get an error message stating that they cannot join the class group because of various reasons....such as "being outside the organization" (their profiles are not), or "group code not recognised"......

I can't find any remedy to these problems....and as I've said, about half of the students have been able to join, so it's not a problem with the Access Code...it's a pity, as there is not much use in using Schoology if everyone is not able to use it.

I am experiencing this as a student and the instructor is not sure how to remedy the problem. I was able to join the course but not the group. Can the Schoology administrators help?

For me, in the Groups drop down, the "Join" link is not visible. I can only see the "See All" link at the right. I have been given an access code to join a group. But cannot use it.

    Hello Glee,

In this case, you will need to contact your Schoology Support Contact in order to discuss options for access to join groups. You can find your Support Contacts in Schoology by clicking the question mark icon at the top right.

If you are not able to contact your school, please let me know and I will reach out to them on your behalf.

We were able to get a new Schoology user to join a group, but were unable to get existing users to join a group. We do not have a Schoology Support Contact at our institution. Would you recommend creating a course instead?

    Hello Erin,

As a workaround, you could use a course as long as you can successfully enroll students into that course. I will go ahead and create a ticket for your issue concerning enrollments in a group so that we can track that issue. I will follow up with your directly via email.

    Thank you!

Hello Charles, I'm trying to add a group but I'm receiving an error related to a right or privilege, the message shows the following error: "You do not have permission to join groups outside of your organization", some other persons are able to add the group, does this issue need to be raised here? or, do I need to reach someone else?.

    Thank you!

Hi Charles, I have contacted him when we had the issue and he doesn't know how to resolve it. Does he need to do something related to the group?, create a new one?, or do we need to do something as students?

    Thank you!

    it is still.

Hello Charles, the teacher has created a new group and I'm still receiving the same error, some other students have access to the group. Looks like it is something in my user.

Question, I'm part of previous course, and this is new course, do I need to belong to the course?, what does the teacher do in order to the sudents have access to the new group?.

    Regards.

Given I posted this in another post, and Charles Black confirmed my work around is successful, I will post the fix here that I see several having if they haven't already resolved it, AND in case anyone else comes on this thread before this is resolved:

    Good morning

I have ran into this problem multiple times, and here is my solution to fix it:

    1. Have the student create a new account, using the group access code you gave them.

    2. For their log in have them use their email address from the school (if it hasn't already been used, and as long as the school gives an email address, otherwise just use something simple for their username (Like first.last)).

    3. Once the account is created, have them go to "Account Management" by clicking on the down arrow next to their name in the upper right corner when using the web interface.

    4. Click "Merge Accounts." This will prompt the user to enter their other account's information.

    5. Click on Merge Accounts. This will transfer all their courses and materials to the new account they just created, and link their account to the school.

    Hope this helps!

Wow, that workaround is great if you're not trying to get 140 9th graders to do it. Unfortunately, this is still an issue, and there's got to be a better solution. Have you guys figured it out yet? I want all of my students to be able to access the same discussion thread, so I can't put it on their existing courses. I think it will be too confusing for them to have two courses for the same class.

I am also having this issue. I deleted the group and recreated it. I also reset the access code multiple times. Has the issue been fixed and then reoccurred, or has the issue just never been fixed? Can there be some sort of follow-up here on this board? Thank you for a wonderful platform! If this can be fixed, it will be perfect, in my opinion.

Hello - any update?  We are continuing to have this issue and we are asking parents who are connected to their students' accounts to join a group in order to access information related to our program.  There does not seem to be a consistent email domain or anything that would be causing the problem.

Thanks so much for your help.

    Hi Meredith,

Thank you for reaching out in the Schoology Community!

Sorry to hear you're encountering this issue.

This can occur if the account is associated with a different organization than the group. Because Basic organizations are created by individual users, there can be multiple organizations with the same name but are read as different associations.

As a workaround, please consider the following:

    1. Have the student create a new account, using the group access code.
    2. The student can use a different email address or username than their current login.
    3. Once the account is created, have them go to "Settings" by clicking on the down arrow next to their name in the upper right corner.
    4. Click "Merge Accounts." This will prompt the user to enter their other account's information.
    5. Click "Merge Accounts" again. This will transfer all their courses and materials to the new account they just created, and link their account to the school.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Best,
