Android Mobile App for Parents

Sign Up

If you don’t already have a Schoology account, you can sign up for one using a Parent Access Code provided by your child's teacher.  Once you have the access code, download the Schoology app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store and follow these steps to get started:

  1. Tap Sign Up for Schoology at the very bottom.
  2. Select Parent.
  3. Enter the access code provided by your child's instructor and click Continue.
  4. Enter your First and Last Name, an email address or username, and a password for your account.
  5. Check the box to agree to Schoology's Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
  6. Tap Register to complete.

Important Note: Enterprise schools may or may not allow users to register on their own. Contact your child's teacher with any questions on this process.

Login

Once you have an account, download the Schoology app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store. Tap the app icon to open it on your device.

Log in through your School (Enterprise)

Since many Enterprise schools have set up a custom login process, begin by selecting your school:

  1. Use the keyboard to enter the name of your school or organization. As you type, matching choices populate in the list. The name, ID number, city, state, and zip code for the school should appear below.
  2. Tap the name of your school or organization when it displays.
  3. You can use an email address or username to log in to the application, depending on how your account was set up.
  4. Tap Log In to complete.

Note: In general, it's best to contact your instructor for assistance logging into Schoology. If your school has set up one set of login credentials to use across many apps, the school can assist you with resetting your password. This same process applies to schools with Google Single Sign-On.

Log in through www.schoology.com 

If you use the free version of Schoology or do not use school-provided login credentials, use this workflow to log in to the Android app.

  1. Tap CONTINUE.
  2. Enter your Email Address and Password.
  3. Tap LOG IN to complete.

Note: If you log in with this method, you can reset your password by opening a mobile browser to app.schoology.com and using the Forgot my password link.

Recent Activity

Note: The Home page for parents displays the courses and recent activity for the parent. To view courses and recent and activity for your child, proceed to My Children

Recent Activity displays all of the most recent updates and blog posts that populate your Schoology homepage.

Refresh Feed

At any point, you can update the Recent Activity feed by swiping down on the Recent Activity screen then releasing to refresh. To view additional posts, simply swipe upwards to scroll.

Depending on permissions in place at your school, you may be able to post course, group, and personal updates from the Android app. To create a new update, follow these instructions:

Create a New Update

To create a new update:

      1. Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
      2. Tap Update.
      3. Click Post to and select where you would like to post the update. You can select one or more locations.
      4. Tap Select to enter your chosen locations.
      5. Type your update.
      6. Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below : Photo/Video/File/Resource.
      7. Tap Post > on the upper right corner to complete.
      8. To cancel your comment, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Comment on an Update

To reply to updates on the app with a comment:

      1. Tap Comment below the update you would like to comment on.
      2. Enter your comment.
      3. Tap Post > on the upper right corner to complete.
      4. To cancel your comment, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.
      5. To view comments on updates, tap the comment icon.

Like an Update or Comment

To add a Like to an update or comment, tap Like below the update or comment. You can remove your Like by tapping Unlike.

Delete an Update

To delete your update, tap and hold on the update. A popup will appear to either delete or cancel the deletion. Please note that you may only delete an update that you have created.

Create a New Discussion

      1. Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
      2. Tap Discussion.
      3. Click Post to and select where you would like to post the update. You can select one or more locations.
      4. Tap Select to enter your chosen locations.
      5. Enter a Title.
      6. Enter a Description.
      7. Optional: To attach an item to your update, tap on the buttons below : Photo/Video/File/Resource.
      8. Tap Post > on the upper right corner to complete.
      9. To cancel your discussion, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create a Calendar Event

      1. Tap + on the upper right corner of the screen.
      2. Tap Event.
      3. Tap Post to and select which calendar you would like the event to be created.
      4. Enter the Date (When/End Date) , Title , Description and Who can RSVP
      5. Optional: To attach an item to your update, tap on the buttons below : Photo/Video/File/Resource.
      6. Tap Post > on the upper right corner to complete.
      7. To cancel your event, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Note: The Upcoming page for parents displays the calendar events for the parent. To view upcoming events for your child, proceed to My Children.

The Schoology Android app navigation menu allows you to quickly navigate to each essential location on the Schoology App. Tapping the navigation menu in the top left corner of the screen gives you immediate access to:

  • Messages: Messages sent to and from your personal account.
  • Notifications: Notifications about your own Schoology activity.
  • Requests: Accept or dismiss requests to join courses and groups.
  • Your profile: Tap your name to view your personal account profile.
  • Recent Activity: View your course dashboard and recent activity.
  • My Children: View your child's activity in Schoology - courses, groups, calendar, grades, attendance, and more.
  • Courses: View courses in which you are directly enrolled.
  • Groups: View groups in which you are directly enrolled.
  • Resources: View resources you've uploaded to Schoology and shared resources from groups.
  • Grades: View grades you've received in Schoology.
  • Calendar: View your own calendar in Schoology.
  • Settings: Configure settings for your personal account.
  • Logout: Log out of the Schoology Android app.

This navigation menu is available on every page so that you can quickly navigate through the app from any point.

Messages

Note:
  • Your child's school may or may not allow you to send messages in Schoology.
  • These messages are for your personal parent account. It's not possible to view messages your child receives.

Messages contain all of received and sent mail in your Schoology account. You can access messages by tapping Messages from your navigation menu. You can refresh, compose a new message, and reply to existing messages directly from this sub-menu, or tap View All to see all messages. If you see a red indicator next to Messages in the navigation menu that means you have a new message from other Schoology members!

Inbox

The inbox displays the received messages by default. A blue dot indicates an unopened message. To view the message, simply tap the message you would like to open.

Sent

To view sent messages, tap Sent from the Inbox screen, and tap the message you would like to open.

Compose and Reply to Messages

To compose a message, tap + on the upper right corner while in the Inbox or Sent screen.

  1. Begin typing a name in the To field. The field will auto-populate with users to whom you may send mail. To select a user, simply tap on their name from among the list.
  2. Type the subject of the message.
  3. Type the content of the message.
  4. Optional: To attach an item to your message, click on the buttons below : Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  5. Tap Send > on the upper right corner of the screen to complete.
  6. To cancel your update, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

To reply to a message, open the message and tap on the pencil icon on the upper right corner of the screen.

Requests

The Requests area lists all of the course and group requests that are associated with your Schoology profile. Tap Accept or X, depending on the action you would like to take for each item. If you see a red indicator next to the Requests icon in the navigation menu that means you have a pending request!

Note: These requests are for your personal parent account. It's not possible to view requests your child receives.

Notifications

Schoology sends you email notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. If you see a red indicator next to Notifications in the navigation menu that means you have a new notification!

Note: These notifications are for your personal parent account. To view notifications for your child, proceed to My Children.

Push Notifications

Users can choose to receive a push notification on their Android device whenever an important piece of content is added to a course or group. Here are some examples of the types of occurrences our push notifications would relay:

  • Course update post
  • Group comments on updates and discussions
  • New assignment or discussion post
  • Receive a private message

When a notification arrives, if the app is closed, then you may see a banner or alert display on your screen. If the Schoology app is open, then the notification will be displayed on your screen. Tapping the notification will take you to that piece of content within the Schoology Android app.

Enabling Notifications

To enable notifications, make sure you've downloaded the latest version of the Schoology Android app from the Google Play or the Amazon App Store. After installing the update and logging into the app, you will be prompted to enable notifications.

Disabling Notifications

To disable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android device Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. Depending on your device, disable notifications.
  4. You should stop receiving notifications immediately. 

Re-Enabling Notifications

To re-enable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android device Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. Depending on your device, enable notifications.
  4. As a final step, you will need to close the Schoology app completely from the background if it is there. And then restart the app.

You will now start receiving notifications. 

To change the notifications that you receive:

  1. Log into the Schoology app.
  2. Tap Settings from the navigation menu.
  3. Select Account Info.
  4. From there, select the Notifications tab.
  5. You can customize the notifications you receive by adjusting the various settings under the Mobile column.
  6. Be sure to tap Save Changes at the bottom of the panel.

Your Profile

Tap your name from the Navigation menu to view your personal profile. These same areas also display if you view the profile of another user in the app.

Updates

The Updates tab of your profile displays updates you've posted on your personal profile.

Info

Tap Info to view the info displayed on your user profile. To edit which info displays on your profile, go to Account Settings > Privacy Settings.

Badges

Tap Badges from the menu of your profile to view badges you've been awarded in Schoology.

Note: The Blog and Portfolio sections of user profiles are not currently supported on the Schoology Android app. To view a user's blog or portfolio, log into Schoology on a mobile browser.

My Children

Note: The My Children area for parents using the Schoology Android app uses a WebView. In other words, this area appears like an embedded mobile browser view within the app. Files uploaded to the Schoology Document Viewer are not supported in mobile browsers. Therefore, parents are unable to view files within the document viewer in the My Children area of the app. To view these files, log into Student Activity View on the web version of Schoology.

The My Children view within the Android app is where parents can view the courses, groups, grades, attendance for their child. Similar to the Student Activity View on the web version of Schoology, this area displays a preview of how your child(ren) can view their Schoology information.

Courses

Tap Courses from the Navigation menu to see list all of the courses for which you are a member. To access a course section, tap on the name of your choice.

Depending on the settings in place at your school, the following information is available under a particular course section:

  • Materials (Assignments, Tests/Quizzes, Files/Links, Discussions, Albums, Pages)
  • Updates
  • Upcoming
  • Grades

Materials

The Materials area lists all of the Assignments, Assessments, Tests/Quizzes, Files/Links, and Discussions and Pages in a particular course. To view any of the materials options just tap their name.

Updates

Course updates show the Recent Activity for a particular course section. For more information about Updates, please see Recent Activity.

Upcoming

View upcoming items or calendar events for a particular course.

Grades

The Grades displays the Midterm/Final grades and Grading Periods grades by grading category.

View Grades

You can view graded items by tapping the Grading Period in which they are located.

Groups

The Groups area lists all of the groups for which you are an administrator or a member. To access a group, tap the name of the group.

  • Updates
  • Upcoming
  • Discussions
  • Albums
  • Members
  • Resources 

Group Updates

Group updates show the Recent Activity for a particular group. For more information about Updates, please see Recent Activity.

Group Upcoming

View upcoming items or calendar events for a particular group.

Group Discussions

Group Discussions displays the discussions associated with the group.

Group Albums

Group albums display the media albums associated with the group.

Group Members

The Members area allows you to view all of the members of the group in alphabetical order by last name. To view a member profile, simply tap on the user’s name.

Group Resources

Group Resources contain content stored for access exclusive to the group's members.

Tapping Resources on the navigation menu allows you to access your existing Resources and Collections. For more information, please see our article on Resources.

Grades

The Grades area lists all of the courses for which you are a member. To access the grades for a course section, tap on the section of your choice:

The following information is available under a particular course section:

  • Midterm/Final grades
  • Test/Quiz, Assessment, Assignment and Graded Discussion grades organized by grading period and grading category

Within the Grades for a particular course section, tap any item to view more grade detail such as submissions and comments.

Calendar

Tap the left navigation menu to access your Calendar. The Calendar area displays all of the events, tests/quizzes, assessments, assignments, and discussions that are associated with your Schoology profile in a day-to-day Upcoming events list, as well as a traditional month-by-month Calendar view.

Create an Event

You can create an event from your Schoology Calendar. To create an event:

  1. Tap + on the upper right corner of the screen.
  2. Optional: Use the toggle to indicate that the event is an All Day Event.
  3. Tap Post to and select which calendar you would like the event to be created.
  4. Enter the Date (When/End Date) , Title, Description and set RSVP (optional).
  5. Tap Post > on the upper right corner to complete.
  6. To cancel your event, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Settings

Notification Settings

      • Notifications: Enable push notifications to your device.
      • Ringtone: Set notification ringtone.
      • Vibrate: Vibrate on incoming notifications.
      • Phone LED: Flash LED on notifications (Depends on your device's model and permissions).

Account Settings

Account Info

The Account Info area allows you to control your account settings and preferences pertaining to Account Settings, Notifications, and Privacy Settings.

Account Settings

The Account Settings tab allows you to change and update your personal information as well as Merge Accounts.

Notifications

Schoology sends you email notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. For more information about notifications on the Android Schoology app, please see Notifications.

Privacy Settings

The Privacy Settings tab allows you to select who can access and search for your information.

Offline Storage Settings 

Schoology materials can be downloaded for offline access on your Android device.

Logout

The Logout button is located on the navigation menu. You may log out at any time by tapping on the navigation icon on the upper left corner of the screen. Logout is the last option on the navigation menu.

Note: You will stay logged in until the application until you manually log out or uninstall the application.
