Android Mobile App for Students

Important Note: Depending on the permissions set by your school, you may or may not have access to certain areas of the mobile app as described below. Please contact your teacher for more information.

Sign Up

If you don’t already have a Schoology account, you can sign up for one using an access code provided by your teacher.  Once you have the access code, download the Schoology app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store and follow these steps to get started:

Follow these steps to sign up for a new account:

  1. Open the app on your device and tap Sign up for Schoology at the very bottom.
  2. Tap Student.
  3. Enter the 10-digit access code from your teacher.
  4. Enter the following information for your profile:
        • First Name
        • Last Name
        • Email Address or Username
        • Password
        • Confirm Password
        • Birthdate
  5. Check the box to agree to Schoology's Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
  6. Tap Register to complete.

Log In

If you already have a Schoology account, download the Schoology app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store. You can use an email address or username to login on the application, depending on how your account was set up:

Log in through your School (Enterprise)

Since many Enterprise schools have set up a custom login process, begin by selecting your school:

  1. Use the keyboard to enter the name of your school or organization. As you type, matching choices populate in the list. The name, ID number, city, state, and zip code for the school should appear below.
  2. Tap the name of your school or organization when it displays.
  3. You can use an email address or username to log in to the application, depending on how your account was set up.
  4. Tap Log In to complete.

Note: In general, it's best to contact your instructor for assistance logging into Schoology. If your school has set up one set of login credentials to use across many apps, the school can assist you with resetting your password. This same process applies to schools with Google Single Sign-On.

Log in through www.schoology.com

If you use the free version of Schoology or do not use school-provided login credentials, use this workflow to log in to the iOS app.

  1. Tap CONTINUE.
  2. Enter your Email Address and Password.
  3. Tap LOG IN to complete.

Note: If you log in with this method, you can reset your password by opening a mobile browser to app.schoology.com and using the Forgot my password link.

If your teacher has provided you with a QR code for login, please follow these steps.

To access the areas of Schoology within the Android App, tap the Schoology icon at the top left of the screen to access the menu.

From the navigation menu, you will be able to access:

      • Your Profile
      • Recent Activity
      • Courses
      • Groups
      • Resources
      • Grades
      • Calendar
      • People
      • Settings
      • Logout

Messages

Note: Depending on the permissions set by your school, you may or may not have full access to Messages. Please contact your teacher for more information.

Messages contain all of received and sent mail in your Schoology account. You can access messages by tapping Messages from your navigation menu. You can refresh, compose a new message, and reply to existing messages directly from this sub-menu. If you see a red dot next to Messages in the navigation menu that means you have a new message from other Schoology members!

Requests

The Requests area lists all of the course and group requests that are associated with your Schoology profile. Tap Accept or X, depending on the action you would like to take for each item. If you see a red indicator next to the Requests icon in the navigation menu that means you have a pending request!

Notifications

Schoology sends you email notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. If you see a red dot next to Notifications in the navigation menu that means you have a new notification!

Push Notifications

Users can choose to receive a push notification on their Android device whenever an important piece of content is added to a course or group. Here are some examples of the types of occurrences our push notifications would relay:

  • Course update post
  • Group comments on updates and discussions
  • New assignment or discussion post
  • Receive a private message

When a notification arrives, if the app is closed, then you may see a banner or alert display on your screen. If the Schoology app is open, then the notification will be displayed on your screen. Tapping the notification will take you to that piece of content within the Schoology Android app.

Enabling Notifications

To enable notifications, make sure you've downloaded the latest version of the Schoology Android app from the Google Play or the Amazon App Store. After installing the update and logging into the app, you will be prompted to enable notifications.

Select OK, and you will be registered for notifications.

Disabling Notifications

To disable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android device Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. Depending on your device, disable notifications.
  4. You should stop receiving notifications immediately. 

Re-Enabling Notifications

To re-enable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android device Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. Depending on your device, enable notifications.
  4. As a final step, you will need to close the Schoology app completely from the background if it is there. And then restart the app.

You will now start receiving notifications. 

Managing Which Notifications You Receive

To change the notifications that you receive:

  1. Log into the Schoology app.
  2. Select Account Info.
  3. From there, select the Notifications tab.
  4. You can customize the notifications you receive by adjusting the various settings under the Mobile column.
  5. Be sure to tap Save Changes at the bottom of the panel.

Your Profile

Tap your name from the Navigation menu to view your personal profile. These same areas also display if you view the profile of another user in the app.

Updates

The Updates tab of your profile displays updates you've posted on your personal profile.

Info

Tap Info to view the info displayed on your user profile. To edit which info displays on your profile, go to Account Settings > Privacy Settings.

Badges

Tap Badges from the menu of your profile to view badges you've been awarded in Schoology.

Note: The Blog and Portfolio sections of user profiles are not currently supported on the Schoology Android app. To view a user's blog or portfolio, log into Schoology on a mobile browser.

Recent Activity

Refresh Feed

At any point, you can update the Recent Activity feed by swiping down on the Recent Activity screen then releasing to refresh. To view additional posts, simply swipe upwards to scroll.

Create a New Update

To create a new update:

      1. Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
      2. Tap Update.
      3. Click Post to and select where you would like to post the update. You can select one or more locations.
      4. Tap Select to enter your chosen locations.
      5. Type your update.
      6. Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below : Photo/Video/File/Resource.
      7. Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
      8. To cancel your update, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap the Back button on your device.

Create a New Discussion

      1. Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
      2. Tap Discussion.
      3. Click Post to and select where you would like to post the update. You can select one or more locations.
      4. Tap Select to enter your chosen locations.
      5. Enter a Title.
      6. Enter a Description.
      7. Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below : Photo/Video/File/Resource.
      8. Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
      9. To cancel your discussion, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap the Back button on your device.

Create a Calendar Event

      1. Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
      2. Tap Event.
      3. Tap Post to and select which calendar you would like the event to be created.
      4. Enter the Date (When/End Date) , Title , Description and Who can RSVP
      5. Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below : Photo/Video/File
      6. Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
      7. To cancel your event, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap the Back button on your device.

Comment on an Update

To reply to updates on the app with a comment:

      1. Tap Comment below the update you would like to comment on.
      2. Enter your comment.
      3. Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
      4. To cancel your comment, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap the Back button on your device.
      5. To view comments on updates, tap the comment icon.

Like an Update or Comment

To add a Like to an update or comment, tap Like below the update or comment. You can remove your Like by tapping Unlike.

Delete an Update

To delete your update, tap and hold on the update. A popup will appear to either delete or cancel the deletion. Please note that you may only delete an update that you have created.

Note: Remember to swipe down from the top of the screen, then release to refresh the screen to see the latest information.

Upcoming

Tap Recent Activity at the top of the app to select Upcoming. The Upcoming area displays calendar events, tests/quizzes, assessments, assignments, and discussions in chronological order by due date to help you locate and plan for upcoming activities. Tap on the item to view that item in Schoology.

Courses

Courses lists all of the courses for which you are a member. To access a course section, tap the name from the list.

Depending on the settings in place at your school, the following information is available under a particular course section:

  1. Materials (Assignments, Tests/Quizzes, Files/Links, Discussions, Albums, Pages)
  2. Updates
  3. Upcoming
  4. Grades

Materials

The Materials area lists all of the Assignments, Online Tests/Quizzes, Files/Links, and Discussions and Pages in a particular course. To view any of the materials options just tap their name.

Updates

Course updates show the Recent Activity for a particular course section. For more information about Updates, please see Recent Activity.

View upcoming items or calendar events for a particular course.

Grades

Grades displays the Midterm/Final grades and Grading Periods grades by grading category. You can view graded items by tapping the Grading Period they are located in:

Join a Course

You can join a course using an access code by following these steps:

  1. Tap Courses.
  2. Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the Courses menu.
  3. Enter the access code.
  4. Tap Join.

Groups

The Groups area lists all of the groups for which you are a member. To access a group, tap the name of the group.

      • Updates: View updates and comments for a particular group.
      • Upcoming: View upcoming events for a particular group.
      • Discussions: View all of the discussions in a particular group. Tap on a discussion to view, post, and reply to comments.
      • Albums: View any Media Albums within the a group. Albums can contain audio, video and images.
      • Resources: Group Resources contain content stored for access exclusive to the group's members. While course materials can be stored within Group Resources, items such as assignments and assessments can only be used for submissions within a course.

Join a Group

You can join a group using an access code by following these steps:

  1. Tap Groups.
  2. Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the Groups menu.
  3. Enter the access code.
  4. Tap Join.

Resources

Tapping Resources on the navigation menu allows you to access your existing Resources and Collections. For more information, please see our article on Resources.

Grades

Note: Depending on the permissions set by your school, you may or may not have access to Grades. Please contact your teacher for more information.

The Grades area lists all of the courses for which you are a member. To access the grades for a course section, tap on the section of your choice:

The following information is available under a particular course section:

      • Midterm/Final grades
      • Test/Quiz, Assessment, Assignment and Graded Discussion grades organized by grading period and grading category

Within the Grades for a particular course section, tap individual items to view more grade detail:

Calendar

Tap the left navigation menu to access your Calendar. The Calendar area displays all of the events, tests/quizzes, assessments, assignments, and discussions that are associated with your Schoology profile in a day-to-day Upcoming events list as well as a traditional month-by-month Calendar view.

Create an Event

You can create an event from your Schoology Calendar. To create an event:

      1. Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
      2. Optional: Use the toggle to indicate that the event is an All Day Event.
      3. Tap Post to and select which calendar you would like the event to be created.
      4. Enter the Date (When/End Date) , Title , Description and set RSVP (optional).
      5. Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
      6. To cancel your event, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap the Back button on your device.

People

Note: Depending on the permissions set by your school, you may or may not have access to People. Please contact your teacher for more information.

The People area allows you to view your School Directory. Tap Directory to see a list of all the members in your School in alphabetical order by last name. To view a member profile, simply tap on the user’s name.

Settings

Notification Settings

      • Notifications: Enable push notifications to your device.
      • Ringtone: Set notification ringtone.
      • Vibrate: Vibrate on incoming notifications.
      • Phone LED: Flash LED on notifications (Depends on your device's model and permissions).

Account Settings

Account Info

The Account Info area allows you to control your account settings and preferences pertaining to Account Settings, Notifications, and Privacy Settings.

The Account Settings tab allows you to change and update your personal information as well as Merge Accounts.

Notifications

Schoology sends you email notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. For more information about notifications on the Android Schoology app, please see Notifications.

Privacy Settings

The Privacy Settings tab allows you to select who can access and search for your information.

Offline Storage Settings 

Schoology materials can be downloaded for offline access on your Android device.

Logout

The Logout button is located on the navigation menu. You may log out at any time by tapping on the navigation icon on the upper left corner of the screen. Logout is the last option on the navigation menu.

Note: You will stay logged into the application until you manually log out or uninstall the application.
