How do I create a formative assessment that doesn’t count against a student’s overall grade?
Formative assessments inform educators on how to support student learning by providing practice and feedback for students. Generally given before and during a unit of study, results are not used for grading. Here a few examples of how educators are leveraging formative assessments in the classroom:
- Graphic Organizers
- Check for Understanding
The Assessment material type in Schoology offers the ability to create technology-enhanced question types to assess student understanding without impacting a student's overall course grade. Assessments can be Individually Assigned to students and/or grading groups to support differentiation. Assessments in Schoology will generate a report that you can analyze to help drive instructional decisions.
You can use any of the following methods to prevent the assessment score from calculating into the overall grade or gradebook grade:
- Set the total points of the assessment to 0.
- Change the grading category to ungraded (no category).
- If you use weighted categories, create a category for formative assessments weighted to 0.
