Common Cartridge Converter

Common Cartridge is a formatting standard you can use to make the content compatible with any system that supports it. You can learn more about Schoology's compliance on IMS Global's Website.

Schoology has built a Common Cartridge Converter that can convert a Common Cartridge v1.1 package into a Common Cartridge v1.2 package. This converter can be used to seamlessly migrate content built in other systems that use v1.1 into your Schoology Resources.

How to use the Common Cartridge Converter

In your legacy LMS, export your course as a Common Cartridge (.imscc) file.

In Schoology:

  1. Go to https://cc-converter.schoology.com/
  2. Upload the Common Cartridge package (.imscc) that you downloaded from your legacy LMS course and the converter will process and download a new version of the Common Cartridge package that can be uploaded into Schoology.

The newly converted file will always be named “converted-common-cartridge.imscc” — Be sure to rename this file to keep them organized.

  3. Navigate to your Personal Resources in Schoology.
  4. Click the down-facing arrow in the menu and select Import.
  5. Choose the option to import a Common Cartridge (.imscc) file as a new collection.
  6. Name the Collection and click Next.
  7. Attach the converted .imscc file from your computer or device and click Next.
  8. Some folders within the Common Cartridge package may contain web content. If there are an HTML file in the folder, the folder structure displays, along with the ability to select the folder. If you prefer not to convert the files, click Skip & Import, and the files will be imported as regular files and folders.
  9. To convert to web content item types, click Convert. Click Import to complete.
  10. Depending on the size of your file, the import process may take some time to complete. You can track the status of the import from your Transfer History.

Browser Info:

  • The Common Cartridge Converter must be used in the latest version of Chrome or Firefox, as well as Safari version 11.1 or higher.
  • The Common Cartridge Converter cannot be used in Microsoft Edge.

Content limitations:

  • As of April 30, 2020, test/quiz content from a Common Cartridge file imports into Resources as Assessments, instead of Test/Quiz for new Schoology Enterprise organizations and instructors using Schoology Basic. Enterprise instructors that previously imported content as tests/quizzes are not affected by this change. If you’re a System Administrator and you wish to import third-party content as tests/quizzes instead of assessments, contact your Schoology representative.
  • Content from your legacy LMS that is not organized into modules will display in an Unused Resources folder in Schoology after import.
    • Assignments and Pages that are imported into the Unused Resources folder will have “.html” at the end of the Title. They can be renamed inside of Schoology after import.
  • Any images/media/files embedded in rich-text descriptions for most content types will not fully convert upon import into Schoology. Instead, these images/media/files are often stored in the “Files” area of a course. These files will be imported into Schoology in the Unused Resources folder. Instructors must manually embed these images/media/files into the rich-text descriptions of the content in Schoology.
  • Content or question types not specified in the table above will not be imported into Schoology. For example:
    • Quiz question types like Formula or Numerical Answer do not import into Schoology.
    • Quiz question point values will always convert to the Schoology default of 1 point after import.
    • Files attached to Discussions do not import into Schoology.
