Android Mobile App for Instructors

Important Note: Depending on the permissions set by your school, you may or may not have access to certain areas of the mobile app as described below. Reach out to your Support Contact for more information.

Sign Up

If you don’t already have an account on Schoology, download the Schoology app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store . Tap on the app to open it on your device, and touch Sign up for Schoology at the very bottom.

Then follow these steps:

  1. Tap Instructor.
  2. Enter the following information for your profile:
        • First Name
        • Last Name
        • Email Address
        • Password
        • Confirm Password
  3. Complete the CAPTCHA to confirm you are not a robot.
  4. Check the box to agree to Schoology's Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
  5. Tap Register to complete.
Important Notes:
  • Enterprise schools may or may not allow a user to register on their own.
  • Signing up is dependent on how the Enterprise organization decides to add users to the system. The district administrators may decide to mass import users and provide login information separately.

Log In

If you already have an account on Schoology, download the Schoology app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store. You can use an email address or username to login on the application, depending on how your account was set up:

Log in through your School (Enterprise)

Since many Enterprise schools have set up a custom login process, begin by selecting your school:

  1. Use the keyboard to enter the name of your school or organization. As you type, matching choices populate in the list. The name, ID number, city, state, and zip code for the school should appear below.
  2. Tap the name of your school or organization when it displays.
  3. You can use an email address or username to log in to the application, depending on how your account was set up.
  4. Tap Log In to complete.

Note: Single Sign-On users will be navigated to their school page after they choose their school on the application. They can log in with their SSO credentials on their school page. This same process applies to schools with Google Single Sign-On. Any users at your organization who are not included in the SSO method should log in through www.schoology.com.

If you use the free version of Schoology or do not use school-provided login credentials, use this workflow to log in to the Android app.

  1. Tap CONTINUE.
  2. Enter your Email Address and Password.
  3. Tap LOG IN to complete.

Note: If you log in with this method, you can reset your password by opening a mobile browser to app.schoology.com and using the Forgot my password link.

To access the areas of Schoology within the Android App, tap the Schoology icon at the top left of the screen to access the navigation menu.

From the navigation menu, you will be able to access:

      • Your Profile
      • Recent Activity
      • Courses
      • Groups
      • Resources
      • Grades
      • Calendar
      • People
      • Settings
      • Logout

Messages

Messages contain all of received and sent mail in your Schoology account. You can access messages by tapping the Messages icon from your navigation menu. You can refresh, compose a new message, view sent messages and reply to existing messages directly from this sub-menu. If you see a red indicator next to Messages in the navigation menu, you have a new message.

Inbox

The inbox displays the received messages by default. A blue dot indicates an unopened message. To view the message, tap the message you would like to open.

Sent

To view sent messages, tap Sent from the Inbox screen, then tap the message you would like to open.

Compose and Reply to Messages

To compose a message, tap on the + icon on the upper right corner while in the Inbox or Sent screen.

  1. Begin typing a name in the To field. The field will auto-populate with users to whom you may send mail. To select a user, simply tap on their name from among the list.
  2. Type the subject of the message.
  3. Type the content of the message.
  4. Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  5. Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  6. To cancel your event, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

To reply to a message, open the message and tap on the reply icon on the upper right corner of the screen.

Note: Your school may or may not allow you to send messages to everyone in the school directory.

Requests

The Requests area lists all of the course and group requests that are associated with your Schoology profile. Tap Accept or X, depending on the action you would like to take for each item. If you see a red indicator next to the Requests icon in the navigation menu, you have a pending request.

Notifications

Schoology sends you email notifications for Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. If you see a red indicator next to the Notifications icon in the navigation menu that means you have a new notification!

Push Notifications

Users can choose to receive a push notification on their Android device whenever an important piece of content is added to a course or group. Here are some examples of the types of occurrences our push notifications would relay:

  • Course update post
  • Group comments on updates and discussions
  • New assignment or discussion post
  • Receive a private message

When a notification arrives, if the app is closed, then you may see a banner or alert display on your screen. If the Schoology app is open, then the notification will be displayed on your screen. Tapping the notification will take you to that piece of content within the Schoology Android app.

Enabling Notifications

To enable notifications, make sure you've downloaded the latest version of the Schoology Android app from the Google Play or the Amazon App Store. After installing the update and logging into the app, you will be prompted to enable notifications.

Select OK, and you will be registered for notifications.

Disabling Notifications

To disable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android device Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. Depending on your device, disable notifications.
  4. You should stop receiving notifications immediately. 

Re-Enabling Notifications

To re-enable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android device Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. Depending on your device, enable notifications.
  4. As a final step, you will need to close the Schoology app completely from the background if it is there. And then restart the app.

You will now start receiving notifications. 

Managing Which Notifications You Receive

To change the notifications that you receive:

  1. Log into the Schoology app.
  2. Select Account Info.
  3. From there, select the Notifications tab.
  4. You can customize the notifications you receive by adjusting the various settings under the Mobile column.
  5. Be sure to tap Save Changes at the bottom of the panel.

Your Profile

Tap your name from the Navigation menu to view your personal profile. These same areas also display if you view the profile of another user in the app.

Updates

The Updates tab of your profile displays updates you've posted on your personal profile. Tap + at the top right to add a personal update.

Info

Tap Info to view the info displayed on your user profile. To edit which info displays on your profile, go to Account Settings > Privacy Settings.

Badges

Tap Badges from the menu of your profile to view badges you've been awarded in Schoology.

Note: The Blog and Portfolio sections of user profiles are not currently supported on the Schoology Android app. To view a user's blog or portfolio, log into Schoology on a mobile browser.

Recent Activity

The Recent Activity area displays all of the most recent updates and blog posts that populate your Schoology Home page. To view additional posts, simply scroll up or down.

At any point, you can update the Recent Activity feed by swiping down on the Recent Activity screen then releasing to refresh. To view additional posts, simply swipe upwards to scroll.

Create a New Update

You can create course, group, and personal updates from the Android application.

To create a new update:

  • Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Tap Update.
  • Click Post to and select where you would like to post the update. You can select one or more locations.
  • Tap Select to enter your chosen locations.
  • Type your update.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your update, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create a New Comment

To reply to updates on the app:

  • Tap Comment below the update you'd like to comment on.
  • Enter your comment.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your comment, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create an Assignment

  • Tap + on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Select Assignment.
  • Tap Post to and choose which course you would like to post the assignment.
  • Fill in the Title and Description and add the Due Date.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your assignment, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your assignment, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create a Discussion

  • Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Tap Discussion.
  • Click Post to and select where you would like to post the discussion. You can select one or more locations.
  • Tap Select to enter your chosen locations.
  • Enter a Title.
  • Enter a Description.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your discussion, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create an Event

  • Tap + on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Select Event.
  • Click Post to and select where you would like to post the event.
  • Optional: Select All Day Event.
  • Enter the Date: When/End Date , Title , Description, and RSVP if applicable.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your event, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Comment on an Update

To reply to updates on the app with a comment:

  • Tap Comment below the update you would like to comment on.
  • Enter your comment.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your comment, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.
  • To view comments on updates, tap the comment icon.

Like an Update or Comment

To add a Like to an update or comment, tap Like below the update or comment. You can remove your Like by tapping Unlike.

Delete an Update

To delete your update, tap and hold on the update. A popup will appear to either delete or cancel the deletion. Please note that you may only delete an update that you have created.

Upcoming

Tap Recent Activity at the top of the app to select Upcoming. The Upcoming area displays calendar events, tests/quizzes, assessments, assignments, and discussions in chronological order by due date to help you locate and plan for upcoming activities. Tap on the item to view that item in Schoology.

Courses

Courses lists all of the courses for which you are a member. To access a course section, tap the name from the list.

Depending on the settings in place at your school, the following information is available under a particular course section:

  • Materials (Assignments, Tests/Quizzes, Files/Links, Discussions, Albums, Pages)
  • Updates
  • Upcoming
  • Gradebook
  • Attendance

Materials

You can view content form the Materials area, including Assignments, Tests/Quizzes, Files/Links, Discussions, and Pages in a particular course.

You can create new Assignments and Discussions from the Materials area:

Create an Assignment

  • Tap + on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Select Assignment.
  • Fill in the Title and Description and add the Due Date.
  • Tap Show more to include grading options:
    • Max Points
    • Category
    • Period
    • Scale
    • Set as midterm/final
    • Enable Submissions (enabled by default)
  • Optional: To attach an item to your assignment, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your assignment, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create a Discussion

  • Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Tap Discussion.
  • Enter a Title.
  • Enter a Description.
  • Enter a Due Date.
  • Tap Enable Grading to enter the following options:
    • Max Points
    • Grade Category
    • Grading Period
    • Grading Scale
  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your discussion, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Updates

Course updates show the Recent Activity for a particular course section.

Create a Course Update

To create a course update follow these steps:

  • Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Tap Update.
  • Write an update.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your update, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create a Course Event

  • Tap + on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Select Event.
  • Optional: Select All Day Event.
  • Enter the Date: When/End Date , Title , Description, and RSVP if applicable.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your event, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Gradebook

The Gradebook displays the Midterm/Final grades and Grading Period grades by grading category.

View Final Grades

View Final Grades by tapping More at the top right corner of the Gradebook:

View Submissions and Add or Edit Grades

View graded items by tapping the title of the test/quiz, assessment, assignment or discussion. To view submissions and add or edit grades:

  • Tap the item you want to grade.
  • Tap the menu at the top and select Grades/Submissions.
  • Select the student by tapping their name.
  • Tap the Submissions sub-menu to view submissions.
  • Use the slider to provide a score for the submission.
  • Optional: Provide a comment and check the box to Display comment to student.
  • Tap the the green check mark to post the grade.

Note: Grades will not appear for grading periods that have not yet started. Graded items without a grading period will populate under the appropriate grading category under No Grading Period.

Attendance

View and enter attendance by tapping Attendance from the top menu. For full details on entering attendance, please review the Help Article: Courses: Attendance.

To enter attendance:

  • Tap inside the cells for a particular day to enter attendance.
  • Tap Save Changes to complete.

Groups

The Groups area lists all of the groups for which you are an administrator or a member. To access a group, tap on the name of your choice.

Group Updates

Group updates show the Recent Activity for a particular group. For more information about Updates, please see Recent Activity.

Group Upcoming

View Upcoming events for a particular group. For more information, please see Upcoming.

Group Discussions

Group Discussions displays the discussions associated with the group. You can tap on a discussion to view, post, and reply to comments.

Group Albums

Group albums display the media albums associated with the group.

Group Resources

Group Resources displays the materials and resources associated with the group.

Resources

Tapping Resources on the navigation menu allows you to access your existing Resources and Collections. For more information, please see Resource Center.

Grades

The Grades area lists all of the courses for which you are an administrator or a member. The following information is available under a particular course section:

  • Midterm/Final grades
  • Test/Quiz, Assessment, Assignment and Graded Discussion grades organized by grading period and grading category
  • Test/Quiz, Assessment, Assignment and Graded Discussion grades with no grading period

To access the grades for a course section, tap on the section of your choice. After you tap the course section, choose More to view Final Grades.

Add or Edit Grades

You can view graded items by tapping on the title of the test/quiz, assignment, or discussion. To add or edit grades:

  1. Tap on the row of the graded item.
  2. Tap the menu at the top and select Grades/Submissions.
  3. A list of the course members will appear. Tap on a member's name to add or edit the grade.
  4. Use the sliding bar to enter a point value.
  5. You can add an optional comment by entering it into the comment field found below the grade sliding bar. Select the checkbox to display the comment to the student, or uncheck the checkbox to keep the comment only visible to you.
  6. Tap the green check at the top to save.
  7. Repeat these steps for each student in the course.

Calendar

Tap the left navigation menu to access your Calendar. The Calendar area displays all of the events, tests/quizzes, assessments, assignments, and discussions that are associated with your Schoology profile in a day-to-day Upcoming events list as well as a traditional month-by-month Calendar view.

Create an Event

  • Tap + on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Select Event.
  • Click Post to and select where you would like to post the event.
  • Optional: Select All Day Event.
  • Enter the Date: When/End Date , Title , Description, and RSVP if applicable.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post > button on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your event, tap the trash icon at the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

People

The People area allows you to view your School Directory and Network. Tap Directory to see a list of all the members in your School in alphabetical order by last name. To view a member profile, simply tap on the user’s name.

Note: Depending on the settings in place at your school, you may or may not have access to view the school directory or a network of connected users.

Settings

Notification Settings

      • Notifications: Enable push notifications to your device.
      • Ringtone: Set notification ringtone.
      • Vibrate: Vibrate on incoming notifications.
      • Phone LED: Flash LED on notifications (Depends on your device's model and permissions).

Account Settings

Account Info

The Account Info area allows you to control your account settings and preferences pertaining to Account Settings, Notifications, and Privacy Settings.

The Account Settings tab allows you to change and update your personal information as well as Merge Accounts.

Notifications

Schoology sends you email notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. For more information about notifications on the Android Schoology app, please see Notifications.

Privacy Settings

The Privacy Settings tab allows you to select who can access and search for your information.

Offline Storage Settings 

Schoology materials can be downloaded for offline access on your Android device.

Logout

The Logout button is located on the navigation menu. You may log out at any time by tapping on the navigation icon on the upper left corner of the screen. Logout is the last option on the navigation menu.

Note: You will stay logged in until the application until you manually log out or uninstall the application.
