Android Mobile App (Instructors)

Important Note: Depending on the permissions set by your organization, you may or may not have access to certain areas of the mobile app as described below. Reach out to your Support Contact for more information.

Sign Up

If you don’t already have an account on Schoology, download the Schoology app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store. Tap the app to open it on your device, and tap Sign up for Schoology at the bottom of the screen.

To continue, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Instructor.
  2. Enter the following information for your profile:
        • First Name
        • Last Name
        • Email Address
        • Password
        • Confirm Password
  3. Complete the CAPTCHA to confirm you are not a robot.
  4. Check the box to agree to Schoology's Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
  5. Tap Register to complete.
Important Notes:
  • Enterprise schools may or may not allow a user to register on their own.
  • Signing up is dependent on how the Enterprise organization decides to add users to the system. The district administrators may decide to mass import users and provide login information separately.

Log In

If you already have an account on Schoology, download the Schoology app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store. Tap the app icon to open it on your device.

You can use an email address or username to log into the application, depending on how your account was set up:

Log in through your School (Enterprise)

Since many Enterprise schools have set up a custom login process, begin by selecting your school:

  1. Use the keyboard to enter the name of your school or organization. As you type, matching choices populate in the list. The name, ID number, city, state, and zip code for the school should appear below.
  2. Tap the name of your school or organization when it displays.
  3. You can use an email address or username to log in to the application, depending on how your account was set up.
  4. Tap Log In to complete.

Note: Single Sign-On (SSO) users will be directed to an additional login screen after they choose their school on the application. Tap Log In Through Your School to continue with SSO login on your school page. This same process applies to schools with Google Single Sign-On. Any users at your organization who are not included in the SSO method should log in through the www.schoology.com option (see below).

Log in through www.schoology.com

If you use the free version of Schoology or do not use school-provided login credentials, use this workflow to log in to the Android app.

  1. Tap CONTINUE.
  2. Enter your Email Address and Password.
  3. Tap LOG IN to complete.

Note: If you log in with this method, you can reset your password by opening a mobile browser to app.schoology.com and using the Forgot my password link.

Home

The Home area gives you quick access to the Recent Activity, Course Dashboard and Upcoming areas in Schoology. Based on your account Settings, either the Recent Activity area or the Course Dashboard is displayed as the first screen you view when opening the Schoology Android app.

The Recent Activity area displays all of the most recent updates and blog posts that populate your Schoology homepage. The Course Dashboard displays your courses in a tiled list. The Upcoming area displays all your upcoming items and events

Tap through the menu under Home to switch between the three views:

Recent Activity

The Recent Activity area displays all of the most recent updates and blog posts that populate your Schoology Home page. To view additional posts, simply scroll up or down.

At any point, you can update the Recent Activity feed by swiping down on the Recent Activity screen then releasing to refresh. To view additional posts, simply swipe upwards to scroll.

Create a New Comment

To reply to updates on the app with a comment:

  1. Tap Comment below the update you would like to comment on.
  2. Enter your comment.
  3. Tap the Post icon AND_post_icon.jpg in the upper right corner to complete.
  4. To cancel your comment, tap the trash icon in the top left corner or tap Back on your device.
  5. To view comments on updates, tap the comment icon.

Like an Update or Comment

To add a Like to an update or comment, tap Like below the update or comment. You can remove your Like by tapping Unlike.

Delete an Update

To delete your update, tap and hold on the update. A popup will appear to either delete or cancel the deletion. Please note that you may only delete an update that you have created.

Course Dashboard

The Course Dashboard displays all your courses in a tiled list. You can access the Course Dashboard from the menu on the Home screen.

Upcoming

From the Home screen, tap Upcoming to display all your upcoming items and events. The Upcoming area displays calendar events, tests/quizzes, assessments, assignments, and discussions in chronological order by due date to help you locate and plan for upcoming activities. Tap on the item to view that item in Schoology.

Using the Quick Post tool

The Schoology Android app Quick Post tool allows you to quickly create updates, assignments, discussions, and events from your Schoology home screen as from within courses and groups. Tap the + icon in the upper right corner of the screen from the Recent Activity view to see these options:

Create a New Update

You can create course, group, and personal updates from the Android application.

To create a new update:

  1. Tap the + icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
  2. Tap Update.
  3. Click Post to... and select where you would like to post the update. You can select one or more locations.
  4. Tap Select to enter your chosen locations.
  5. Type your update.
  6. Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  7. Tap the Post icon AND_post_icon.jpg in the upper right corner to complete.
  8. To cancel your update, tap the trash icon in the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create an Assignment

  • Tap + in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Select Assignment.
  • Tap Post to... and choose which course you would like to post the assignment.
  • Fill in the Title and Description and add the Due Date.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your assignment, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post icon AND_post_icon.jpg button in the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your assignment, tap the trash icon in the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create a Discussion

  • Tap the + icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Tap Discussion.
  • Click Post to... and select where you would like to post the discussion. You can select one or more locations.
  • Tap Select to enter your chosen locations.

  • Enter a Description.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post icon AND_post_icon.jpg on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your discussion, tap the trash icon in the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create an Event

Note: You can also access this option from the Upcoming view.
  • Tap + in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Select Event.
  • Click Post to... and select where you would like to post the event.
  • Optional: Select All Day Event.
  • Enter the Date: When/End Date , Title , Description, and RSVP if applicable.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post icon AND_post_icon.jpg on the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your event, tap the trash icon in the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Messages

Messages contain all of received and sent mail in your Schoology account. You can access messages by tapping the Messages icon from your navigation menu. You can refresh, compose a new message, view sent messages and reply to existing messages directly from this sub-menu. If you see a red indicator next to Messages in the navigation menu, you have a new message.

Inbox

The inbox displays the received messages by default. A blue dot indicates an unopened message. To view the message, tap the message you would like to open.

Sent

To view sent messages, tap Sent from the Inbox screen, then tap the message you would like to open.

Compose and Reply to Messages

To compose a message, tap on the + icon on the upper right corner while in the Inbox or Sent screen.

  1. Begin typing a name in the To field. The field will auto-populate with users to whom you may send mail. To select a user, simply tap on their name from among the list.
  2. Type the subject of the message.
  3. Type the content of the message.
  4. Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  5. Tap the Post icon AND_post_icon.jpg in the upper right corner to complete.
  6. To cancel your event, tap the trash icon in the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

To reply to a message, open the message and tap on the reply icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

Note: Your school may or may not allow you to send messages to everyone in the school directory.

Requests

The Requests area lists all of the course and group requests that are associated with your Schoology profile. Tap Accept or X, depending on the action you would like to take for each item. If you see a red indicator next to the Requests icon in the navigation menu, you have a pending request.

Notifications

The menu notifications display course and group events in chronological order to keep you informed of Schoology activity. If you see a red indicator next to the Notifications icon in the navigation menu that means you have a new notification!

Email and Mobile Text Notifications

In addition to the menu notifications, Schoology sends you email and mobile text notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. In the Notifications area under Settings, you can manage which activity generates email or mobile text notifications.

Note: Email and mobile text message notifications differ from the Notifications menu located in the left navigation menu. The notifications listed under the navigation menu are not customizable. They display information related to course and group events in chronological order to alert you to Schoology activity. Managing Email and Mobile Text Notifications

To change the email and mobile notifications that you receive:

  1. Log into the Schoology app.
  2. Select Settings from the navigation menu.
  3. Under Account Settings, tap Account Info.
  4. From there, select the Notifications tab.
  5. You can customize the notifications you receive by adjusting the various settings under the Email and Mobile column.
  6. Be sure to tap Save Changes at the bottom of the panel.

Push Notifications

You can choose to receive a push notification on your Android device whenever an important piece of content is added to a course or group. Here are some examples of the types of occurrences our push notifications would relay:

  • Course update post
  • Group comments on updates and discussions
  • New assignment or discussion post
  • Receive a private message

When a notification arrives, if the app is closed, then you may see a banner or alert display on your screen. If the Schoology app is open, then the notification will be displayed on your screen. Tap the notification to take you to that piece of content within the Schoology Android app.

Enabling Push Notifications

  1. Make sure you've downloaded the latest version of the Schoology Android app from the Google Play or the Amazon App Store.
  2. After installing the update and logging into the app, you will be prompted to enable notifications.
  3. Select OK, and you will be registered for notifications.

Disabling Push Notifications

To disable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android device Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. Depending on your device, disable notifications.
  4. You should stop receiving notifications immediately. 

Disabling Push Notifications

To disable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. From there, select disable Allow Notifications.
  4. You should stop receiving notifications immediately.

Re-Enabling Push Notifications

To re-enable notifications:

  1. Go to your Android device Settings.
  2. Select the Notifications option and then select the Schoology app.
  3. Depending on your device, enable notifications.
  4. As a final step, you will need to close the Schoology app completely from the background if it is there. And then restart the app.
  5. You will now start receiving notifications.

Your Profile

Tap your name from the navigation menu to view your personal profile. These same areas also display if you view the profile of another user in the app.

Updates

The Updates tab of your profile displays updates you've posted on your personal profile. Tap + in the top right to add a personal update.

Info

Tap Info to view the info displayed on your user profile. To edit which info displays on your profile, go to Privacy Settings from your Account Settings.

Note: Depending on the settings in place at your school, you may or may not have access to Privacy Settings.

Badges

Tap Badges from the menu of your profile to view badges you've been awarded in Schoology.

Note: The Blog and Portfolio sections of user profiles are not currently supported on the Schoology Android app. To view a user's blog or portfolio, log in to Schoology on a mobile browser.

Courses

Courses lists all of the courses for which you are a member. You can also join a course from this area.

Join Courses

To join an existing Course:

  1. Tap Courses from the navigation menu.
  2. Tap the + icon in the upper right.
  3. Enter the Course Access Code.
  4. Tap Join.

The format of the course code should be XXXXX-XXXXX (10 digits). Once you join a course, you will begin receiving updates, grades, comments, and material notifications from the course. To manage which notifications you receive, see Notifications.

Note: Depending on the settings in place at your school, you may or may not have permission to join Courses via Course Access Codes.

Tap Courses from the navigation menu to see a list all of the courses for which you are an administrator or a member. To access a course section, tap the name from the list. Depending on the settings in place at your school, the following information is available under a particular course section:

  • Materials (Assignments, Tests/Quizzes, Files/Links, Discussions, Albums, Pages)
  • Updates
  • Upcoming
  • Gradebook
  • Attendance

Tap and swipe through the menu under the course title to access these items:

Materials

You can view course content from the Materials area, including Assignments, Tests/Quizzes, Files/Links, Discussions, and Pages. To view any of the materials just tap the name of the item.

You can create new Assignments and Discussions from the Materials area:

Create an Assignment

  • Tap + in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Select Assignment.
  • Fill in the Title and Description and add the Due Date.
  • Tap Show more to include grading options:
    • Max Points
    • Grading Category
    • Grading Period
    • Grading Scale
    • Set as midterm/final
    • Enable Submissions (enabled by default)
  • Optional: To attach an item to your assignment, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post icon AND_post_icon.jpg in the upper right corner to complete.
  • To cancel your assignment, tap the trash icon in the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Create a Discussion

  • Tap on the + icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Tap Discussion.
  • Enter a Title.
  • Enter a Description.
  • Enter a Due Date.
  • Tap Enable Grading to enter the following options:

    • Grading Period
    • Grading Scale
  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.

Create a Course Update

To create a course update follow these steps:

  • Tap Update.
  • Write an update.
  • Optional: To attach an item to your update, click on the buttons below: Photo/Video/File/Resource.

  • To cancel your update, tap the trash icon in the top left corner or tap Back on your device.

Gradebook

The Gradebook displays the Midterm/Final grades and Grading Period grades by grading category.

View Submissions and Add or Edit Grades

Tap the title of the Test/Quiz, Assessment, Assignment or Discussion to view the graded item. To view submissions and add or edit grades:

  1. Tap the item you want to grade.
  2. Tap Grades/Submissions from the menu under the item title.

  3. Select the student by tapping their name.
  4. Tap the Submissions sub-menu to view submissions.
  5. Use the slider to provide a score for the submission.

  6. Optional: Provide a comment and check the box to Display comment to student.
  7. Tap the green checkmark in the upper right to post the grade.
Note: Grades will not appear for grading periods that have not yet started. Graded items without a grading period will populate under the appropriate grading category under No Grading Period.

Attendance

View and enter attendance by tapping Attendance from the top menu. For full details on entering attendance, please review the Help Article: Courses: Attendance.

To enter attendance:

  1. Tap the cell next to each student to enter attendance for a particular day.
  2. Tap Save Changes at the bottom of the screen to complete.

Groups

The Groups area lists all of the groups for which you are an administrator or a member. You can also join a group from this area.

Join Groups

To join an existing Group:

  1. Tap Groups from the navigation menu.
  2. Tap the + icon in the upper right.
  3. Enter the Group Access Code.
  4. Tap Join.

The format of the group code should be XXXX-XXXX (8 digits). Once you join a group, you will begin receiving updates, posts, comments, and event notifications from the group. To manage which notifications you receive, see Notifications.

Tap Groups from the navigation menu to see a list all of the groups for which you are an administrator or a member. To access a group, tap the name from the list. Depending on the settings in place at your school, the following information is available under a particular group:

  • Updates
  • Upcoming
  • Discussions
  • Albums
  • Resources

Tap and swipe through the menu under the group title to access these items:

Group Updates

Group updates show the Recent Activity for a particular group. For more information about Updates, please see Recent Activity.

Group Upcoming

View Upcoming events for a particular group. For more information, please see Upcoming.

Group Discussions

Group Discussions displays the discussions associated with the group. You can tap on a discussion to view, post, and reply to comments.

Group Albums

Group albums display the media albums associated with the group.

Group Resources

Group Resources displays the materials and resources associated with the group.

Note: Only the following items are accessible from the mobile app:
  • Files
  • Links

All other items are listed as templates in Resources and can be accessed via the mobile browser or web browser.

Resources

Tap Resources from the navigation menu to access your existing Resources and Collections. For more information, see Resource Center.

Grades

The Grades area lists all of the courses for which you are an administrator or a member. The following information is available under a particular course section:

  • Midterm/Final grades
  • Test/Quiz, Assessment, Assignment and Graded Discussion grades organized by grading period and grading category
  • Test/Quiz, Assessment, Assignment and Graded Discussion grades with no grading period

To access the grades for a course section, tap on the section of your choice. After you tap the course section, choose More to view Final Grades.

Add or Edit Grades

You can view graded items by tapping on the title of the Test/Quiz, Assignment, or Discussion. To add or edit grades:

  1. Tap the title of the graded item.
  2. Tap Grades/Submissions from the menu under the item title.
  3. A list of the course members will appear. Tap the member's name to add or edit the grade.
  4. Tap the Submissions sub-menu to view submissions.
  5. Use the sliding bar to enter a point value.
  6. Optional: Provide a comment and check the box to Display comment to student or uncheck the checkbox to keep the comment only visible to you.
  7. Tap the green checkmark in the upper right to save.
  8. Repeat these steps for each student in the course.

Calendar

Tap Calendar from the navigation menu to access your Calendar. The Calendar area displays all of the events, tests/quizzes, assessments, assignments, and discussions that are associated with your Schoology profile in a day-to-day Upcoming events list as well as a traditional month-by-month Calendar view.

Create an Event

  • Tap + in the upper right corner of the screen.
  • Select Event.
  • Click Post to... and select where you would like to post the event.
  • Optional: Select All Day Event.

  • Optional: To attach an item to your discussion, tap one of the options: Photo/Video/File/Resource.
  • Tap the Post icon AND_post_icon.jpg in the upper right corner to complete.

People

The People area allows you to view your School Directory and Network. Tap Directory to see a list of all the members in your school in alphabetical order by last name. To view a member profile, simply tap the person's name.

Settings

The Settings area allows you to control your account settings and preferences pertaining to Account Settings, Notifications, and Privacy Settings.

Notification Settings

      • Notifications: Enable push notifications to your device.
      • Ringtone: Set notification ringtone.
      • Vibrate: Vibrate on incoming notifications.
      • Phone LED: Flash LED on notifications (Depends on your device's model and permissions).

Account Settings

Account Info

The Account Info area allows you to control your account settings and preferences pertaining to Account Settings, Notifications, and Privacy Settings.

Account Settings

Account Settings allows you to change and update your personal information as well as Merge Accounts.

Notifications

Schoology sends you email and mobile text notifications for Social, Academic, Group, and School activity that occurs in your account. For more information about these notifications on the Android Schoology app, please see Email and Mobile Text Notifications.

Privacy Settings

Privacy Settings allows you to select who can access and search for your information.

Offline Storage Settings 

Schoology materials can be downloaded for offline access on your Android device.

Logout

The Logout button is located on the navigation menu. You may log out at any time by tapping on the navigation icon in the upper left corner of the screen. Logout is the last option on the navigation menu.

Note: You will stay logged in until you manually log out or uninstall the application. Quitting the app will not automatically log you out.
