What is the Google Drive Resource App?
The Google Drive Resource App is one of the Resource Apps available in Schoology. Use Resource Apps to integrate third-party content directly into the Resource Center. This means that all of your personal, shared, public, and external instructional resources are consolidated in one place. With this integration you can:
- Access your Google Drive content from your Schoology Resources.
- Add Google Drive content directly within Schoology and sync to Google Drive.
- Add content from the Google Drive Resource App to a course or resources.
- Import your Google Drive content directly from within courses and groups.
- Edit your Google Drive content in Schoology and sync automatically to Google Drive.
- Add your Google Drive content to updates, discussions, assignments, pages, and tests, including:
- Insert content to embed resources in your materials.
- Attach content in all areas where attachments are available.

How do I install and configure my Google Drive in Resources?
Install the app to your Resources
- In the header at the top of the page, click Resources.
- Click Apps on the left menu.
- In the My Resource Apps list, click Install Apps.
- Check the box next to Google Drive and then click Install.
- Complete the steps to authenticate and approve the Google Drive Resource app.
You can also install the Google Drive app to your Resources from the App Center:
- Click the App Center icon in the header, then click App Center.
- Find and click the Google Drive Resource App.
- Click Install Resource App.
- Enable the option to Add to My Resources.
- Click Install and follow the steps below to connect the Google Drive Resource App.
Connect to your Google Drive Account
- Once you've installed the app, approve Google Drive's access to your Schoology account.
- Click the Connect button to sign in to your Google Drive account.
- Enter your username/email address and password, and then click Connect.
All of your Google Drive content automatically populates in your Google Drive Resource App.
Add Google Content from the Google Drive Resource App
- Open the Google Drive Resource App by navigating to the Resources area of Schoology and select Apps from the left menu. Make sure you're logged into your Google account.
- Click the Add Resources menu at the top of the app.
- Select from among the options to add a Google document, spreadsheet, presentation, or drawing.
- Title the resource and click Submit.
- Click the newly-added item from the list in the app. The Google form appears in a new window to enable you to use the resource as you would use it in Google. The resource saves automatically.
- Close the window to exit.
Add Content from the Google Drive Resource App to a Course or Resources
You can add content directly from the Google Drive Resource app to a course or to a Resource Collection.
To add to a course:
- Click the gear icon to the right of the resource you'd like to add to a course.
- Choose whether you want to import the content as a:
- File: Create a static copy of the Google Drive resource in your Schoology course. You can view this copy of the resource directly in Schoology, but any changes made to the item in Google Drive are not reflected in the course.
Note: The imported file also displays with the file extension, such as .docx for an imported Google Doc.
- Link: Import a linked version of the document to Schoology.
Note: Any user with access may view, edit, and save the linked resource.
- Private Link: A linked document that only you are able to access.
- On the next screen, check the course(s) you wish to add the content to.
- Click Copy Item.
To copy to Resources:
- Click the gear icon to the right of the resource you'd like to copy to a Resource Collection.
- Choose whether you want to import the content as a:
- File: Create a static copy of the Google Drive resource in your Schoology Resources. You can view this copy of the resource directly in Schoology, but any changes made to the item in Google Drive are not reflected in the course.
Note: The imported file also displays with the file extension, such as .docx for an imported Google Doc.
- Link: Import a linked version of the document to Schoology.
Note: Any user with access may view, edit, and save the linked resource.
- Private Link: A linked document that only you are able to access.
- On the next screen, select the Collection(s) you wish to copy the content to from the drop-down menu.
- Additionally, you can select the Folder you wish to copy the content to within your Resource Collection.
- Click Copy Item.
Delete Google Resources from the Google Drive Resource App
You can also delete items from your Google Drive within the app:
- Click the gear icon to the right of the resource you'd like to delete.
- Click Delete.
Import Google Content from directly within a Course
- Within your course, click on Add Materials, or point your cursor in the location on the materials page where you want to add the resource and click the dotted green line that displays.
- Click Import from Resources to open your Resources collection.
- Click Apps and open Google Drive Resource App.
- Select the resources from your Google Drive to add to the course. Enter words or phrases in the Search pane to filter your results. Enclose phrases in single quotes (apostrophes) to search for that exact phrase. Items matching your search terms populate automatically in the results list.
- Choose whether you want to import the content as a:
- File: Create a static copy of the Google Drive resource in your Schoology course. You can view this copy of the resource directly in Schoology, but any changes made to the item in Google Drive are not reflected in Schoology.

Edit Google Drive Resources directly in Schoology
After you've imported a resource from your Google Drive using the Import as Link or Import as Private Link options, you can edit the resource from within Schoology by changing the setting to display the link in Schoology.
- Click the gear icon to the right of resource you'd like to edit from the Course Materials page.
- Select Edit in the drop-down menu.
- Hover over the paper icon to show a tooltip that reads, Display in new window.
- Click the icon to change the setting to Display in Schoology.
- Click Save Changes to apply.
Once this setting has been enabled, click the Google Drive link from your Materials page to open an editable version of the Google Drive link within Schoology. Any changes you make will automatically save so that the original version in Google Drive reflects all changes made in Schoology.
Add Google Content to your Course Materials
Insert Content
You can insert items from your Google Drive directly into the description of your assignments, test/quiz questions, discussions, pages, and folders using the Insert Content tool in the Rich Text Editor.
To insert Google Drive items into the description of a material:
- Click Add Materials and one of the material types mentioned above, or open an existing item in your course.
- Click the Insert Content icon along the top of the Rich Text Editor.
- Select Google Drive Resource App from the drop-down menu.
- Select the resources from your Google Drive to add to the item.
- Enter words or phrases in the Search pane to filter your results. Enclose phrases in single quotes (apostrophes) to search for that exact phrase. Items matching your search terms populate automatically in the results list.
- Choose whether you want to import the content as a:
- Link: Import a hyperlink that opens the Google Drive resource in a new tab.
Note: Any user with access may view, edit, and save the linked resource.
- Private Link: A linked document that only you are able to access.
- Embed: Embed the Google Drive resource as an iframe within the material. Edits made to the resource in Google Drive will be reflected in the embedded version in Schoology.
- Link: Import a hyperlink that opens the Google Drive resource in a new tab.
Attach a Resource
Along the bottom panel of the Rich Text Editor, you can click the Resource option to access the Google Drive Resource App. This provides the options to import a Google Drive resource as a link or embed as an iframe within the material:

Can I have more than one Google Drive account integrated with my Schoology account?
- No, you can only connect with one Google Drive account at a time on Schoology.

Revoke access to the Google account
Log in to the Google account you have previously used to access the app, and then follow these steps:
- In your Google account, click the grid in the upper-right.
- Select Account.
- On the left navigation menu, select Security
- On the Third-party apps with account access panel, select Manage third-party access.
- Select Schoology.
- Select Remove Access.
Now, go back to Schoology, and connect again:
- Navigate to Resources from the header.
- Select Apps from the left menu.
- Click Google Drive Resource App.
- Connect to your Google account.
I'm getting "An Error Was Encountered" message when attempting to access the Google Drive Resource App on Safari. How do I fix this?
