Google Drive Assignments on Mobile

You must be using version 4.2 or later of our iOS app or version 5.1 or later of our Android app in order to access assignments created via the Google Drive Assignment App on a mobile device.

On the Schoology mobile app, students can access their assignments and launch the necessary Google Drive apps from within Schoology in order to create their own copies of the content to work on and submit. The instructor can then provide feedback on the Google Doc and grade the assignment, all on their iOS or Android device.

Creating a new Google Drive Assignment on Schoology is currently only supported via the web browser.

We recommend downloading the Google mobile app(s) that you plan on using in conjunction with Schoology if you plan to access a Google Drive Assignment from Schoology on your mobile device.

Student Experience

Students have access to two tabs displayed at the top of their assignment: Assignment and My Document. Clicking the file icon in the My Document tab will generate a copy of the original file that will then be shared between you (the instructor) and the student. This copied file will then be placed and organized in your drive.

In the Assignment tab, students can:

  • Access the due date and time.
  • Access the assignment Description.
  • Review a rubric if one is being used to grade the assignment.

Students click the My Document tab in their view of the assignment to create their own copy of your original file.

On the mobile app, students can tap the document icon to generate their copy of the file and to open it in the Google app. Tap the file icon and then tap Open in App to view and edit the file in the native Google app.

Student can access assignments created via the Google Drive Assignment App from the Materials page of their course, as they would any other course material. When they open the assignment, they will see a similar view of the assignments as they would on the web browser.

On the mobile app, students can access their copy of the file by tapping the My Document tab.

Then, tap the file icon in the center of the screen.

To open the file, tap Open in App.

This launches the file in the respective Google app. In this example, the student is launching the Google Docs app on her tablet by tapping Open in App.

The student's file will launch in the Google Docs app, where she is able to view and edit her copy of the assignment file. When she is done working and has saved her work in Google, she can tap Schoology in the upper-left corner of the screen to come back to the Schoology app.

Tap Submit to submit the Google file to the instructor. Once the student submits, she no longer has edit access to the Google file.

Instructor Experience

As an instructor, you have access to three tabs displayed at the top of the assignment. Each tab has additional controls and information.

On the Assignment tab, you can:

  • See the assignment's description and due date.
  • Review a rubric if one is being used to grade the assignment.
  • Open the Google file you selected to create the assignment by tapping on the file icon

This is the file that your students will use to create their own copies of the file, and any edits you make do not automatically update in previously-created copies of the file. That is, only students who create their copy after you make the edits will have versions that contain the edits. Updates to the file are not reflected for students who've already made their copies.

On the In Progress and Submissions tab, you can select a student from the list and then tap on their document to launch it in the Google app.
