OneDrive Assignments on Mobile - Instructors

On the Schoology mobile app, students can access their assignments and launch the necessary Microsoft apps from within Schoology in order to create their own copies of the content to work on and submit. The instructor can then provide feedback on the OneDrive document and grade the assignment, all on their iOS or Android device.
Important Notes:

  • You must be using version 4.2 or later of the Schoology iOS mobile app or version 5.1 or later of the Schoology Android app in order to access assignments created via the OneDrive Assignments App on a mobile device.
  • Creating a new OneDrive Assignment on Schoology is currently only supported via the web browser.
  • We recommend downloading the Microsoft mobile app(s) that you plan on using in conjunction with Schoology if you plan to access a OneDrive Assignment from Schoology on your mobile device.
  • If you are using Schoology Assignments simultaneously with Microsoft Teams Assignments, it is recommended as best practice to disable Teams Assignments to avoid repetition between the two platforms.

Student Experience

Students can access assignments created via the OneDrive Assignments app from the materials page of their course, as they would any other course material. When students open the assignment, they will see a similar view as they would on the web browser.

Students can access two tabs displayed at the top of their assignment: Assignment and My Document.

In the Assignment tab, students can:

  • See the due date and time.
  • See the assignment Description.
  • Review a rubric if one is being used to grade the assignment.

Students can tap the My Document tab in their view of the assignment to create their own copy of your original file that will then be shared between you (the instructor) and the student. This copied file will then be placed and organized in your OneDrive.

Editing the student copy on mobile devices

On the mobile app, students can access their copy of the file by tapping My Document.

Then, tap the file icon in the center of the screen.

To open the file, tap Open in App.

This launches the file in the respective Microsoft app. In this example, the student is editing a .docx file, so the Word app can be launched on their tablet by tapping Open.

The student's file will launch in the Word app, where they can view and edit their copy of the assignment file. When the student is done working and has saved their work in Word, they can tap Schoology in the upper-left corner of the screen to return to the Schoology app.

Back in the Schoology app, tap Submit to submit the Word file to the instructor. Once students submit, they no longer have access to edit the file. If a student navigates back to the Word app to edit the file, a warning message will appear.

We recommend enabling the Delete Sign-In Credentials option in the iOS Settings for the Word app. If multiple students within the same OneDrive organization are sharing the device, you will need to enable this option before students can logout/login on shared devices.

Instructor Experience

As an instructor, you have access to three tabs displayed at the top of the assignment. Each tab has additional controls and information.

On the Assignment tab, you can:

  • See the assignment's description and due date.
  • Review a rubric if one is being used to grade the assignment.

Open the OneDrive file you selected to create the assignment by tapping the file icon.

This is the file that your students will use to create their own copies of the file, and any edits you make do not automatically update in previously-created copies of the file. That is, only students who create their copy after you make the edits will have versions that contain the edits. Updates to the file are not reflected for students who've already made their copies.

Within the In Progress and Submissions tabs, you can select a student from the list and tap on their document to launch it in the Microsoft app.

You can make edits to the student's document directly within the Microsoft app. These will be visible when you or the student view the document.

To submit a grade for the student's assignment submission, navigate back to the Schoology app. Tap the total points for the assignment to enter a grade and any comments.
